Zambia has deployed soldiers to contain political violence which has broken out ahead of Thursday’s general elections. Several people have been killed in recent weeks. There are 16 presidential candidates – but the main contenders are the incumbent – President Edgar Lungu and opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema – a businessman who has already made several unsuccessful presidential runs. Five years ago Lungu narrowly defeated Hichilema. The opposition alleged vote rigging and there was unrest. Many here worry that history will repeat itself. In South Africa, the army has been deployed to Cape Town, as what’s being described as a “taxi war” continues to escalate. Dozens of people have been killed over the past few months, with rival taxi associations battling it out for ownership of a hotly contested route. Authorities have now closed the route, in a bid to restore calm. But thousands of commuters are bearing the brunt of the closure. Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, whose leadership of the nation has been disputed since the July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, told the Washington Post newspaper he will cede power Monday. Ariel Henry, who was appointed as prime minister by Moise two days before the assassination and who was recently recognised as the “designated prime minister” by the international community, will take over. A week after the arrest of former South African President Jacob Zuma triggered riots, community members and vigilantes have started working to protect properties and businesses from being looted. Thousands of soldiers have been deployed to help police, but law enforcement agencies still appear unable to stop attacks by rioters. The city of Durban has seen some of the worst violence. “I am alive, thanks to God,” Martine Moise, the wife of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moise, said in Creole in an audio message. “I am crying, it is true, but we cannot let the country lose its way,” she said. “We cannot let his blood … have been spilled in vain.” Haiti’s minister of culture and communications, Pradel Henriquez, confirmed to the AFP news agency that the audio was authentic. Authorities in Haiti say they have arrested two people in connection with the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. Four other suspects were killed in a gunfight with security forces. Senegal’s army says it has captured rebel bases in the south. It is the latest offensive against an armed group that wants to create an independent state in the southern Casamance region. Senegal hopes the operation will help end one of Africa’s longest civil conflicts. The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance, also known as the MFDC, has been fighting for independence from Senegal for the last 40 years.
