Elections in Germany’s largest state Bavaria are being seen as a test of where Europe’s largest economy is heading. Polls show increasing support for the far-right party the Alternative for Germany (AFD). Traditionally, the party is stronger in the east of the country. Czech voters have chosen former General Petr Pavel, an ex-chairman of the NATO Military Committee, as their new president. He was the clear winner in a two-day run-off vote, seeing off his populist challenger Andrej Babis.
