Kenya deploys hundreds of troops to regional force in eastern DRC

Kenyan President William Ruto says his country is sending more than 900 military personnel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to join a new regional force tasked with trying to calm deadly tensions fuelled by armed groups. Ruto on Wednesday called the mission “necessary and urgent” for regional security and said he and the DRC’s president had agreed on how Kenyan forces would work with Congolese and other forces on disarming rebels and peacekeeping in the country’s troubled east. DRC closes Rwanda border after soldier is shot dead during attack

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister is calling for a de-escalation in tension, along its border with Democratic Republic of Congo. On Friday a Congolese soldier was killed in an exchange of fire at the crossing. The neighbours have had a strained relationship for decades. DR Congo orders Goma evacuation after Mount Nyiragongo erupts

A volcanic eruption near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo has forced thousands of people to flee for safety. At least five people died in a car crash in the panic. Neighbouring Rwanda has opened its border to let in those fleeing the eruption. Initially, scientists said the lava flow was heading away from Goma, but now they’ve warned that new fractures have put two million residents at risk. Rwanda genocide suspect Felicien Kabuga arrested in France

Rwandan genocide suspect Felicien Kabuga was arrested on Saturday near Paris after 25 years on the run, accused of playing a leading role in one of the worst massacres of the 20th century. The 84-year-old, who is Rwanda’s most-wanted man and had a $5m bounty on his head, was living under a false identity in a flat in Asnieres-Sur-Seine, according to the French justice ministry.
