Peru oil spill: Judge bars Repsol executives from leaving country

Peru’s government says an oil spill triggered by the volcanic eruption near Tonga is twice as big as feared. It is estimated nearly 12,000 barrels has leaked into the Pacific Ocean. A judge in Peru has barred four executives from Spanish energy giant Repsol from leaving the country for 18 months, as authorities investigate a gigantic oil spill that saw approximately 11,900 barrels of oil leak into the ocean – almost double an initial estimate. Officials probe cause of massive oil spill in California

Investigators in California are looking into whether a massive oil spill could have been caused by a ship’s anchor striking a pipeline. It’s being described as an environmental catastrophe. More than 500,000 litres of oil has leaked into the ocean. Crews are working around-the-clock to contain the slick in the Pacific and clean up tar along the coast. Indian Ocean faces growing threat of fuel spill

The MV Wakashio ship still has more than half of its 4,000 tonnes of fuel on board after running aground off Mauritius last month. A state of emergency has been declared because of the threat of catastrophic damage to coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. According to the country’s prime minister, the ship is breaking apart. It is feared the vessel could break up as cracks in the hull widen. Russia’s 20,000-tonne diesel spill pollutes waterways in Siberia

Waterways near Russia’s Siberian city of Norilsk have been rapidly polluted by a spill of more than 20,000 tonnes of diesel fuel in recent days, according to state media. Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on Wednesday a state of emergency, dedicating federal resources to the clean-up effort. He said local officials had been inefficient in dealing with the disaster. The spill occurred on Friday when a diesel tank ruptured at a thermal power plant, according to a statement by the city’s main employer, metals miner Nornickel.
