The MV Wakashio ship still has more than half of its 4,000 tonnes of fuel on board after running aground off Mauritius last month.
A state of emergency has been declared because of the threat of catastrophic damage to coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.
According to the country’s prime minister, the ship is breaking apart.
It is feared the vessel could break up as cracks in the hull widen.

@jim halpert what? Are you claiming the government of Brazil responsible for this tragedy? Every ship has a destination, if something happens to a ship that doesn’t mean that the country of the ships destination has any responsibility. And why would a country be willing to do this? What would Brazil gain, in fact the opposite happened, Brazil purchased the oil but it didn’t arrive, so Brazil lost money because of this tragedy.
The world has seen this sort of thing too many times. We need to ditch oil and go green and the world needs to forget about their pockets and think about the planet. I saw a comment on here that was directing this to God. Look, it’s mankind that are the destroyers of the earth not God.
Only a select few need to stop lining their pockets, but they never will. Hoarding money is a disease that is praised by too many.
It’s happening but slowly. Oil is just vital for us at least for now.

I don’t know the numbers, but the cost of ditching plastic, coal and oil plants, motor vehicles and eating methane-producing meat would IMO make millions of people not able to afford things they can today. As in, the standard of living would be lowered. We have to change it, but unless we look at pockets, people will loose a lot.

We as consumerist nations could wean ourselves off of oil but we simply choose not to out of convenience(it’s also worth mentioning it’s also partly due to the permeation of fossil fuel giants in government like the Koch brothers who block climate change reforms that lessen oil demand).

Japan should clean up the oil and compensate lost tourism revenue to the area residents affects plus lost tax revenue both to local and national government. Simple. $4bil. minimum. That will teach ship operators to be careful and those country that register them to be equally accountable.
