Thousands of people have been told to leave their homes, after a volcanic eruption on the Spanish Canary Islands. The eruption followed a week of increasing seismic activity on the island of La Palma. With a population of 85,000, La Palma is one of the eight volcanic islands in Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago off Africa’s western coast. At their nearest point, the islands are 100km (60 miles) from Morocco. The lava’s slow advance has already consumed entire buildings and authorities are still unsure of the lava’s future path.
