Tonga is calling for “immediate aid”, with an urgent need for fresh water and food, as it assesses the damage caused by Saturday’s eruption of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai.
The volcano exploded in a massive eruption on Saturday – said to be the biggest since Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 – triggering a tsunami and blanketing the Pacific island nation in volcanic ash.
The appeal came as experts detected another eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai.Australia and New Zealand on Monday sent surveillance flights to assess the damage in Tonga and said they were coordinating with the United States, France and other countries on the humanitarian response.

You ain’t wrong because the media has been showing us the eruption and tsunami from the earlier part of the day. There is no footage of the cataclysmic eruption at sunset except for the satellites’. Very few educated people can accurately guess the utter destruction that has occurred at Tonga. It was greater than most nuclear explosions. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess the result.

Because eruptions are difficult to predict. You can make a forecast and rough prediction of when a volcano could erupt.
Take the Geldingadalir volcano in Iceland for example. There had been thousands of earthquakes at the end of December every day. Studies showed that magma was rising at a rate of 130 meters per day. From that it was predicted that the magma would reach the surface on the 11th of January. So what happened? Nothing. It seems the magma has stalled, at least for now.

Fortunately, it doesn’t look all that bad. I’m guessing <1000 lost when it's all said and done. And, maybe that volcano erupts like this every 1000 years, but there are hundreds if not thousands of sub-sea volcanoes out there -- so, that's a misleading stat. It's historically not uncommon to see an eruption and a tsunami taking out tens of thousands of people. Remember Sumatra -- that was the big one with estimated 280k dead as recently as 2004. This looks ... not as bad as that thank God.
