Status of mercenary group: Putin says Wagner has no legal basis to operate

The Kremlin says the status of the Wagner mercenary group needs to be reviewed. This comes a day after President Vladimir Putin said the group has no legal basis to operate in Russia. Some of Russia’s highest-ranking generals have not been seen in public since the mutiny by Wagner mercenaries last week. The group’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin wanted the arrest of Russian defence ministry officials. He accused them of incompetence and ordering attacks on his fighters. Russian authorities drop charges against Wagner group

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) says it is dropping a criminal case against Yevgeny Prigozhin and his Wagner Group related to the mercenary’s attempted rebellion in the country over the weekend, according to local media reports. Russian state news agency RIA Novosti says the case was dropped because “the participants had ceased actions directly aimed at committing the crime”. Russia’s defence ministry says the Wagner Group is preparing to hand over all its equipment after attempting to launch a revolt in the country over the weekend. Wagner mutiny fallout: Prigozhin says group ‘fought for survival’

The head of Wagner Group has released his first statement since the group’s armed mutiny on June 24th. In an 11 minute audio recording, Prigozhin explained that Wagner was bound to be disbanded. He said Belarusian president Aleksander Lukashenko offered a solution for the group to continue working legally in Russia.
