Afghan gov’t struggles to counter sweeping Taliban advances

Tajikistan is deploying thousands of reserve soldiers to protect its border with Afghanistan where the Taliban has been fast capturing more territory. The Afghan government in Kabul has said that the areas recently seized by the Taliban will soon be retaken in a counteroffensive. Over the last six days, the Taliban took control of 36 districts, or 10 percent of the country. This was the picture on Monday. The Taliban has doubled the number of districts it controls since May 1 when US forces started their final withdrawal, a move now more than 90 percent complete. Taliban seizes key districts in Afghanistan as gov’t forces flee

The Taliban has made significant territorial gains in Afghanistan in the past weeks, as US forces count down to their final withdrawal. Fighters have captured Panjwai in Kandahar, the group’s birthplace and former stronghold, and are inching closer to the regional capital, Kandahar city. Panjwai is the fifth district in Kandahar province to fall to the armed group in recent weeks as the Taliban offensive gains momentum. They claim to have seized more than 100 out of nearly 400 districts in the country, with a strong presence in the north. Taliban captures Afghanistan’s main Tajikistan border crossing

The United Nations’ special representative for Afghanistan has warned of increased instability after recent military gains by the Taliban. On Monday, its fighters captured the Imam Sahib district in northern Kunduz province. Violence has escalated since the United States announced plans to withdraw its troops by September. Senegal army captures MFDC rebel bases in Casamance region

Senegal’s army says it has captured rebel bases in the south. It is the latest offensive against an armed group that wants to create an independent state in the southern Casamance region. Senegal hopes the operation will help end one of Africa’s longest civil conflicts. The Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance, also known as the MFDC, has been fighting for independence from Senegal for the last 40 years. Death toll at 35 as Israel strikes hit buildings in Gaza

As Israel’s army continues to bomb the Gaza Strip early on Wednesday, at least 35 Palestinians, including 12 children have died. At least five Israelis have died after Hamas, which rules Gaza, launched multiple rocket attacks from the Palestinian-controlled territory. The rocket fire came after Hamas demanded Israel pull its security forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. Gaza has not been subject to such intense bombardment since 2014. Russia closes access through Kerch Strait for six months

There is more tension between Russia and Ukraine, this time at sea. Russia has closed all naval access to the Kerch Strait. Ukraine said the closure is illegal and violates a treaty. Moscow has said its forces are conducting military drills in the Strait, following the mobilisation of tens of thousands of Russian troops on the Ukraine border in recent weeks.
