Al-Shifa Hospital ‘an empty shell with human graves’: WHO

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says the UN agency and other partner organisations have managed to reach the medical complex Gaza City following Israel’s deadly two-week siege. “The team witnessed at least five dead bodies during the mission. Most of the buildings in the hospital complex are extensively destroyed and the majority of assets are damaged or reduced to ashes. Even restoring minimal functionality in the short term seems implausible,” he said in a post on X. “An in-depth assessment by a team of engineers is needed to determine if the remaining buildings are safe for future use. WHO and partners’ recent effort to support the revival of basic services […]

‘Victory for humanity’: Doctor lauds WHO vote on Gaza action

Earlier we reported the World Health Organization executive board unanimously voted in favour of a resolution calling for “immediate and unimpeded” healthcare aid for Gaza. It was only the seventh time in the UN body’s 75-year history that such a vote took place. “It is an important moment for WHO – an organisation focusing on international public health. He noted the concern in Geneva as colleagues working in Gaza told the horror stories of what’s happening there. “Our colleagues are […]

The World Health Organization says Brazil’s coronavirus infection rate appears to have “plateaued” and it should seize the opportunity to drive down transmission. And as our Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports, there is growing criticism of government responses across the continent. – Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe – Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish – Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera – Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/ #AlJazeeraEnglish #WHO #Brazil

WHO: Brazil’s COVID-19 cases ‘much higher’ than reports

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the number of coronavirus infections in Brazil could be much higher than is being reported as the lack of testing means many cases are likely going undetected. Latin America’s largest country is currently the world’s second-worst affected with 51,000 deaths and more than a million infections of the novel coronavirus. Many more infections and deaths are feared because social distancing measures are not being taken seriously.
