The Russian government is giving away land in its Far East in a bid to increase the region’s sparse population. Any eager Russian can put their name down for a free hectare of land. The only obligations are to use the plots productively, and not sell them to foreigners.

I’m Brit too and read of this some years ago. You have to commit to seven years and then can apply for Russian citizenship. If Russia and it’s Boffins could come up with some templates for popular uses it would help. It seems a long way from services and it can get very cold there. Perhaps some underground living, hydroponics, indoor animal husbandry, flower farming indoors? So much of life needs heat and light energy. So Russia, how about workable suggested templates for use.

According to a study by the University of Melbourne roughly 45% of land of land in Australia is uninhabitable for settlement and another 40% is only habitable for short term settlement which is largely used for cattle herding. This means only 15% of its territory is habitable for long term settlement.
@Aaron Conlon the dessert areas could be turned in grass which is being done in parts of china where is dessert and they cattle areas could be used to grow plants because it takes up less land and produces less methane than animals because they have antibotics in their bodies which according the un is the leading cause of climate change and where i live there is a farm over 10km away and sometime smell from far as my own back garden.
By plants i mean fruit and vegtables and nuts where the cattle areas are.

There are many areas for development in the Far East, apart from Kamchatka, and some with good lands. Besides, it is not always winter in those areas…there are hot summers.

They used to give 40 hectares of land here in Canada to poor families a century ago. You had government assistance for a few years if you cleared the land each year and cultivate it. What do you want to do with only an hectare, well, maybe a micro farm but you won’t be able to thrive….

OK, here is the truth. The politicians (better to say “top criminals”) got the best pieces of land for their buildings many years ago. Now they give land away which is a move to legalize their real-estate. nice loophole for financially o.k. (not necessarily rich) Russians. they get their free land, then they use it “productively” by having some chickens. they can have a nice holiday home. Especially if it can be protected somehow during the year. I sure would have something there, if I were such a Russian fella. For some more productive purpose, 1 free hectare is not much, though. I’m not sure whether it can support a family. But maybe it is a good choice for some services (relax tourism, rehab groups, f.e.) or intellectual work, like software development. produce your electricity somehow, and
