More than 3,600 people died from COVID-19 in Brazil on Friday – a new daily record.
And as the toll surpasses 300,000 deaths, there is alarm over the growing number of young people becoming seriously ill and dying from the virus.
State and local authorities are being forced to take action.

All research at a Fort Detrick laboratory that handles high-level disease-causing material, such as Ebola, is on hold indefinitely after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the organization failed to meet biosafety standards.
No infectious pathogens, or disease-causing material, have been found outside authorized areas at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.
The CDC inspected the military research institute in June and inspectors found several areas of concern in standard operating procedures, which are in place to protect workers in biosafety level 3 and 4 laboratories, spokeswoman Caree Vander Linden confirmed in an email Friday.
The CDC sent a cease and desist order in July.
After USAMRIID received the order from the CDC, its registration with the Federal Select Agent Program, which oversees disease-causing material use and possession, was suspended. That suspension effectively halted all biological select agents and toxin research at USAMRIID, Vander Linden said in her email.
The Federal Select Agent Program does not comment on whether a program such as USAMRIID is registered and cannot comment on action taken to enforce regulations, Kathryn Harben, a spokeswoman for the CDC, wrote in an email.
“As situations warrant, [Federal Select Agent Program] will take whatever appropriate action is necessary to resolve any departures from regulatory compliance in order to help ensure the safety and security of work with select agents and toxins,” Harben said in the email.
The suspension was due to multiple causes, including failure to follow local procedures and a lack of periodic recertification training for workers in the biocontainment laboratories, according to Vander Linden. The wastewater decontamination system also failed to meet standards set by the Federal Select
Agent Program, Vander Linden said in a follow-up email.
“To maximize the safety of our employees, there are multiple layers of protective equipment and validated processes,” she said. …………………….

There may be some of that however, the US leads the world by far in number of vaccination shots administered (over 140 million), people totally vaccinated (47 million) & in total number of people with at least one shot (almost 95 million as of 27 March).
Brazil on the other hand, not so much. Europe (minus the UK), also not so much. They are all seeing a 3rd wave. The US is not, and in fact due to having over 125 million people (38% of population, vaccinated partially, fully or from having caught & survived the virus) with immunity, has seen all numbers drop across all 50 states by more than half and as much as by 85% since the peak at the beginning of January.
In cases sure, most of our old at-risk has been vaxxed. We are at 100 million people with vax, and 100 million that have most likely had covid. So roughly 200/330 mill that have some level of protection. It’s not perfect, but I feel better than Brazil and India.

@Bobbie Floresdon’t get me wrong, Ivermectin is still better than nothing. It’s been approved for general use to treat COVID for the next 6 months in Czech Republic and Slovakia and probably more EU countries soon. It’s already widely used in South America. Honestly, I think there probably won’t be a single cure for COVID, a treatment objective is to reduce viral replication and regulate a person’s immune response to minimize the damage while their body fights off the infection. The presentation of COVID can vary significantly, different immune responses in different people, meaning they need different treatments to get them through with minimal symptoms and side effects. The only one size fits all recommendations at this point is what people can do before COVID – getting in better general health (especially adequate exercise, sleep & diet low in inflammatory ingredients like sugar) and vitamin D supplementation (though this is ideally evaluated by a physician because it can be overdosed). And obviously vaccination is helpful, but with the amount of mutations emerging (due to many countries inability to reduce transmission), it may be less helpful as time goes on.
However the issue is ivermectin is needed early in the infection, otherwise it’s not really effective… when there are so many cases it’s impossible to treat them early, they have gone into a disaster mode now

RADNOR, Pa., March 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — NeuroRx, Inc. today reports 60-day results of the Phase 2b/3 trial of intravenously-administered ZYESAMI™ (aviptadil acetate) for the treatment of respiratory failure in critically-ill patients with COVID-19, which is being developed in collaboration with Relief Therapeutics Holding AG (SIX:RLF, OTCQB:RLFTF). Across all patients and sites, ZYESAMI™ met the primary endpoint for successful recovery from respiratory failure at days 28 (P = .014) and 60 (P = .013) and also demonstrated a meaningful benefit in survival (P = < .001) after controlling for ventilation status and treatment site. (PRNewsfoto/NeuroRx) (PRNewsfoto/NeuroRx) In addition to the robust overall significance across all 196 treated patients at all 10 clinical sites, the prespecified analysis of recovery from respiratory failure is clinically and statistically significant in the 127 patients treated by High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) (P = .02), compared to those treated with mechanical or non-invasive ventilation at tertiary care hospitals. In this group, ZYESAMI™ patients had a 71% chance of successful recovery by day 28 vs. 48% in the placebo group (P = .017) and a 75% rate of successful recovery by day 60 vs. 55% in the placebo group (P = .036). Eighty-four percent (84%) of HFNC patients treated at tertiary medical centers with ZYESAMI™ survived to day 60 compared with 60% of those treated with placebo (P = .007). To the company's knowledge, ZYESAMI™ is the first COVID-19 therapeutic to demonstrate advantages in both survival and recovery from critical COVID-19 in a randomized, double-blind multicenter trial. On the basis of these findings, NeuroRx plans to apply immediately to the United States Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) and to subsequently submit a New Drug Application (NDA).
