At least 21 people have been killed after hail, freezing rain and high winds stuck during an ultramarathon in China’s Gansu province on Saturday.
A total of 172 people took part in the race, 151 have been confirmed safe after rescuers found all the missing runners on Sunday.

@ArchesBro lol have you been in a storm on a mountain? you cant set up or house anything there. I go up into mountains solo and the weather is EXTREMELY unpredictable. You can get a rough forecast but most mountains have their own fierce weather systems. Lots of things will change from minute to minute. Visibility, Hail, snow, wind and wind chill. The only way to lessen the risk of death and gain safety and survival is carrying emergency equipment such as a map and a gps device, survival blanket, Goretex clothing, headtorch, whistle and a light with distress signal. The runners should have been provided with these especially the survival blanket.
I live on a mountain and during unstable local weather l might be outside in a t-shirt enjoying the sun and still be able to see a hailstorm on some mountains a few hours drive away but the front will miss me apart from maybe some wind.

Over 12% of the participants died in a single marathon race event. That is insane. There should have been spotters stationed every kilometer with first aid stations every two to five kilometer depending on difficulty of the terrain and in any case the event should have ended by late afternoon so that anyone failing to check in within an hour of the finish could be located before nightfall. People who enter such events have the expectation that the organizers are competent and have been advised by experienced runners and health officials. Just like so much in China, the optics are all they care about and cut corners on everything else. Still no word why the skyscraper was wobbling yesterday.
American paramedic here. Sometimes we get job details where we have to patrol big marathons and foot races. Funny thing is, mostly we just slowly tail the people at the back. And often times it’s just one old lady. So we get into a situation where a giant diesel ambulance is trundling down the road at 4mph 50 feet behind this ancient woman running a marathon. I always thought it was a bit embarassing for that final runner…
There are 10 checkpoints in the 100 km marathon, and each checkpoint needs to be clocked to make sure that the athletes have not taken a shortcut.The event was expected to end during the day, but the storm and hail delayed the race and debris flow blocked rescue vehicles

All these extreme sports have assumed risks accepted by the participants, not something the event organiser can mitigate fully. Bad weather is part and parcel in the wild and it’s each runner’s responsibility to take consideration and prepare with the necessary equipments. As it stands, it really is bad luck and some runner’s failure to carry sufficient gears is just poor decision making.

When I free-climbed one of the rockies and fell at the peak 20ft to ledge barely big enough to stand on, trackers were able to deduce that something was wrong and within 15 hours, a helicopter found me and lined me off. Yes, but there was one stretch between two checkpoints that was extra long, extra mountainous, extra unsteady, and was hit with a hail storm and a sudden landslide. That’s where most of the victims died.

Emergency blankets blow away by very strong Wind, according to what i read, from a survivor.
Most of the runners deposited their jackets at a check point 68 km from start, since they believed they did not need it in the first half of the race. Unfortunately the hail happened only 30 km from start and they froze to death.

wow I just checked this tournament just wiped out the whole elite of super marathon. Most who are dead are former national champions in super marathon, because only the best players got that far in the mountain and got killed.
A local shepherd saved 6 players who suffered hypothermia. The organizer was so careless to the players’ lives that they even didn’t bother to offer any supplies there.
It’s really sad about it. But I have questions why do runners were wearing just t-shirts and pants since it was that cold even on a start line? It’s said the starting line was at 1650 meters and it’s was just +1 when they reached 2250 on that deadly point. So even on a start line it should have been only + 7 or even +5 that morning

Going into an unpredictable mountainous region with No navigation or gps devices like a watch, no map, No survival Blanket, headtorch, lightweight packable Jacket, survival whistle? all of these are tiny and combined weigh less than a few ounces in a small pack. Maybe the organisers need to think about this next time. The whistle, headtorch and survival blanket alone are a life saver. Some headtorches have a flashing distress signal.
They have all these, but they are not enough to protect the freezing rain and strong wind.
@jason cheng they do not I saw them. A survival blanket and packable goretex would definitely aid in survival. I go up in the mountains in snow rain and -20. A survival blanket alone can retain over 90% of body heat plus its waterproof.
