A 21-storey building has collapsed in the Nigerian city of Lagos.
It is believed 50 people are trapped in the building that is reported to have been under construction.
Officials in the second-most populous city in Africa have been trying to demolish or retrofit unsafe buildings. More than 80 buildings have been demolished this year.

Horrible, prayers to the family and deceased
Such a tragedy. Thank you for keeping us updated on what’s happening
May God the almighty have mercy on the people in Nigeria Ameen❤️🤲🏼
Sounds like america
This type of accident is caused by the West.
How can someone in Chad be giving reports in Nigeria? GOD have mercy
Hahaha…. Chad is so far away from Lagos. So the reports arent good enough.
God have mercy, especially for Buhari voters.
The legacy of colonialism and imperialism lives on.
@The King of Debates read the comments I replied to and you would get the gist.
@The King of Debates No you didn’t get it. He’s indirectly mocking black people that it’s the legacy of colonialism that caused it. He insinuated black people would blame white people for this
From what I understand From America some of the whites left reasonably trained and competent people to run some of these countries, especially the British, and immediately corruption, nepotism, dictatorship moved in. The worse were dictators. The communists did a lot mess things up. Then there were leaders playing off the East and West game.
@Oba Orishait’s actually the opposite,He Himself is Black blaming every thing on Whites as usual!!!!!
@Charles Dayon lol. Maybe open some historical post colonial books before writing nonsense.
Prayer 🙏🏻 to those affected by this 💜
that must have been built terribly, it looks like every part of the building just fell apart! looks pretty bad for finding survivors, too.
Yes actually the building developers guaranteed that they could only assure the durability of the building until the third floor but the owner wanted to continue anyway so the developers officially withdrew last year.
@Daniy3l Perfect example of someone prioritizing money over people’s lives
🤦🏻♂️
Nigeria again? SMH.
What building materials are they using?
Most likely made in cheap everything china…
It’s not just about materials
Dangote cement. Poorly filtered materials
Do you mean “what building materials that they did NOT use” and resulted in the collapse of the building.
I guess the building in Miami that crasher also used dangote cement right smh
Lagos is in such a precarious situation, it’s terrible to know that contractors additionally added to the risk by building substandard structures.
And it’s like since 2009.
Another bad news from my country
One word corruption
why did you make that three words?
Lol that’s three word not 1😂😂
After nigerians voted Buhari twice, now they are complaining about corruption.
Climate Change ???
yah . totally NOT short-cuts & shoddy buildings put up just for a buck without concern for safety.
The audacious lawlessness of some Nigerians. I learnt that the same building was sealed by the governor sometime last year because the developers did not have the necessary permits. Now that the coconut head developers have murdered many souls, I hope he’ll be happy now.
@Daniy3l what was the reason for the developers assuring only 3-storey there? Are you so sure of what you are saying? Are they building on an existing foundation that was designed for 3-storey building? Is it from the soil report? What is their reasons, if you are not very sure please don’t mislead people, this is a very sensitive issue, there are other similar tall buildings that has been existing for years within that neighborhood of Ikoyi.
@Civility I’m not misleading anyone I’m only saying what I heard I’m not a journalist or anything and please mind your language
@Daniy3l I didn’t insult you nor do I intend to, but as a civil engineer, reading your statement you sound so factual, if I can deduce what you said, it means you are saying the building developers quaranteed the building to stop on the 3rd floor, as that is what can only be achieved on that location(soil). Whereas the client choose to do otherwise by continuing the building to the 21st floor.
Well I don’t think that is the case here, from the letter in circulation, that letter is from a consultant firm(a civil engineering consulting fim) not the building developer, and what the letter is saying is that they can only quarantee their active and supervisory involvement on the building up to the fourth floor, probably the client who is also the building developer chose to ignore the advice of the consulting firm about correcting certain things they were not doing right hence the consultant decided to pull out in order not to be involved in their mess, which is what we are seeing today.
The civil engineering consulting firm is in the best position to tell us what actually transpired.
The state building regulation agency, town planning, ministry of lands and housing, the construction contractor, the architectural consultant and every other person’s involved also has to us what was approved against what was built and how it was built.
I sincerely hope they don’t silent this as usual.
@Civility ” I hope they don’t silence this as usual” you sound Nigerian because the government is good at being silent. Anyway thanks for the prep talk I’ve realized my mistake
@Daniy3l yes I am a Nigerian, honestly our government is something else. This situation is a very pathetic one, now the state has confirmed that what was approved is 21 storey, let see how the probe goes. Thank you.
Isrial
Isrial has a team that can fly in there’s a 24 to 48 Hour window for survivors.
Yep! In order to wipe out any remaining survivors🤭
You mean the same team that beat and deport black jewish Ethiopians that move to Israel. Lmao.
Heavy Machinery
WTF?!? Chad isn’t remotely close to Lagos. You should just have gotten someone in your studio to talk about this. Not some guy 1500km away.
rather 1500miles away.
But the message is delivered
I just mentioned this. Big shame that Al Jazeera is trying to cut costs by using only one correspondent for the entire West Africa (I stand to be corrected)… He doesn’t know more than a man in Iceland… I mean, Chad? LOL!
@Diana Ahuche what do you mean message passed. How can someone in Chad be a correspondent in Nigeria? Don’t we have English speaking journalist here?
Dont just watch a channel one time and decide things. I have been watching the channel for years. That man is Nigerian, he covers West African news. And how is his location important to the current news?
Justice should go after the officials who were bribed while constructing the building here. Corruption is indeed a lepper.
Oh do shut up,this has nothing to do with corruption, this is just a greedy person who used cheap materials
@DEAR CHRISTIAN CHIC A corrupt and failed nation. Over there you can get away with anything as long as you have the right price.
Watching the whole of this man’s report has given me a reason to be very careful with whatever I hear on Aljazeera. SMH.
Why? I’m in the US, is he not being fully truthful?
@Chiyaka he is reporting from Chad.
There’s a that’s more populated than Lagos in Africa ?
Nigeria are corrupt and so demonic
There is no evil country on earth like Nigeria all political are retualist
With any luck it was full of cybercafes and only wiped out greasy 419 scammers, of which Lagos is in no short supply.
Someone got scammed 😂😂
This one got in the web😃
U need help
Mugu
Stop building houses made of Legos?
They are DUPLOing their population every 20 years 🤭
They can’t build proper safe buildings anymore. Not surprised Nigeria is in a bad state
AlJazeera needs to get a Nigerian correspondent who is available for Nigerian news. It doesn’t make sense that a correspondent is in Chad and reporting an issue in Lagos. He doesn’t know any more than the man in London or Paris….
Prayers to the families of the affected. It is high time government enforces strict quality control measures to eradicate building collapse problem in Nigeria.
Let’s remember Afghanistan 🇦🇫please.
Hail Mary full of Grace the Lord is with thee, Blessed art thou among women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen
CHAD is close to Lagos?
He’s their West African correspondent. It just happens that that’s where he was at the time.
This has nothing to do with climate change! Please stop the deceit!
Climate change yeah ok
It was caused by climate change and Trump did it
Many people don’t understand that it doesn’t matter how strong you build a concrete building if the foundation is not stable it will tumble
Dangote cement
How can someone in Chad be reporting for Lagos??
✝️🙏🏾
No building codes.
So Aljazeera does not have a correspondent in Lagos? Most populous city in Africa, using someone from Chad..lol
He’s Nigerian, he covers west Africa news, works out of Abuja.
I think organizations are scared to send their journalists there ooo.
@D C many foreign media have their correspondents in Lagos.
chad move
@D C even though things aren’t going well in Nigeria, international journalists aren’t targeted or killed, so that’s not an excuse
CHAD aint close to lagos!!!!
Boko haram
Al Jazeera don’t have a correspondent in Nigeria?? Shocking
What if the correspondent was also in the building?
That’s why you can’t sleep. But when army was shooting people at Lekki tollgate was not shocking for you.
@gigi arnaud wait Al Jazeera had footage of that? Wow, the shock intensifies
Pls, it’s wrong for your reporter to be feeding your world viewers with incomprehensive information from a neighboring country… truth is, More than 100 persons are trapped in the building including Mr. Femi the main head!… He’s on inspection with other engineers and number of workers are in there per floor!… The incident happened at 2:pm… Most of them are Dead 🥺
Maybe the weight of the visitors who came with the owner overwhelmed the structural integrity of the building 👷♂️ 👷♀️. Therefore the building collapsed and killed the inoccent construction workers 🙄🤔😉😒😑
What kind of news report is this? This Aljazeera reporter is reporting a story that occured in Lagos Nigeria from chad republic which is another country entirely, and he expects to do a proper job of it?. What a shameful news report. Aljazeera has really decended so low, so low indeed….
I was thinking just the same… No correspondent in Nigeria to cover.
@Let’s save our planet are you trying to compare Chad to Nigeria?
How old is the collapsed building?
The building was under construction. I bet subpar cement was used for its construction and it collapsed under its own weight.
@Porky Sharma Thank you for this information. I appreciated.
How can you call someone from Chad to report a story in Nigeria…. Aljasera you mess up
Thats how irrelevant that corrupt nation has become.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
Cost of corruption
Corruption is the main cause of all this building collapse happening in Nigeria, May the souls of those that died rest in peace
As usual u pple will always come on foreign sites to destroy ur country’s reputation and u wonder why they keep denying u pple visa.
The government actually sealed up the building initially.
The owner pretended to have fixed it and didn’t go through the whole process.
Instead of blaming the greedy owner and engineer,u pple come and just blame government for everything.
The amount of racism Nigerians face outside is bcos of things like this.
The owner and engineer are at fault, this has nothing to do with corruption.
Even buildings abroad collapse as well
@DEAR CHRISTIAN CHIC you want him to LIE?? Or you want him to PRETEND and say the opposite?? 95 percent or more of the politicians are CRIMINALS so the system is heavily corrupt.. the building collapsed because the cement and …. You know what, forget it.. I’m tired of talking about that country!!
Natural disasters seem to take human civilizations away just like in the past
why were they talking like buildings collapse frequently in lagos? this is actually strange 🤔, haven’t seen or heard of something like this frequently if ever
Awful shame
It must be Chinese construction company
nope… same Developers Condominium LA
May the souls of those who lost their life in this unfortunate incident rest in peace. But I must also register my surprise on how these western media from around the world jumped on the news within few ours. Does that mean that they are deliberately turning a blind eyes to all the killings and atrocities going on in Nigeria?
Where are the Nigerian news outlets to report on those killings? Let me guess the’ve all sold out to the highest bidder. Your fight shouldn’t be with the western media paltforms, instead you should go after your corrupt local media.
@dinhos2000 you said it, they have been bought over. At least, we are certain. But for these western media not reporting adequately on killings in Nigeria on an unimargineble proportion, raised an eyebrow.
The problems in Africa not only corrupted leaders but also construction companies are corrupt.
More like rampant corruption everywhere, at every level of the society.
Corruption affects everything
the same worries for us in South Africa RDP houses been built, half done by builders not quite builders, and the structure of a house can colapse, as this man said, storms and water may also affect the ground, we need buildere with experience, the sement needs to dry properly first as they build along, the foundations and structures are most important. to be measured, experienced builders, contractors also their background, important to know, i knew a builder that passed away, , his buildings are standing after many years, solid and strong
Hail Mary full of Grace the Lord is with thee, Blessed art thou among women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death Amen.
Watch Nigerians come here to disgrace their country in 3,2,1……
This has nothing to do with the government.
They already sealed up the building previously so they were actually doing a good job.
The owner pretended to have fixed it and the building was due for inspection b4 this tragedy.
So b4 u pple come here and start shouting bad government, understand the liable person is the greedy owner.
Humans are greedy everywhere, even buildings abroad collapse as well.
I understand that Nigeria has a lot of problems.
Yet,u can’t come online and bash ur country on foreign sites or channels and u wonder why these countries decline ur visa application
Captivating news
Climate change.. you have to be kidding me stop with that nonsense.
Don’t brag about tommorrow,
because you don’t know what today will bring.
It is going to be very hard to find survivors. The collapsed building floors pancake 🥞 on top of each other. There were no concrete columns or iron rebars sticking out from the pictures of the collapsed building. That alone pointed to shady construction practices and lousy oversight on the part of the building 👷♀️ 👷♂️ 👷♂️ 👷♂️ 👷♀️, inspectors, if there was any
Corrupt contractors and local government.
The distance from Chad to Lagos is over 2000km, how is that suppose to be Neighbouring to Lagos? Its seems Aljazeera is not serious to dominate Africa like CNN otherwise you should have a correspondent in Lagos.
Aljazeera is not serious to dominate Africa like CNN look at the backward mentality where are huge Nigerian news channels to report on the issue? Why depend on foreign national news stations such as aljazeera or CNN for world news. Pity
@D.J MAMBA When I wrote that statement, I wasn’t speaking as one relying on the western media to tell this story or my stories. I spoke as one who rely on them to tell international stories not my local stories. There’s huge rivalry between CNN & Aljazeera on who dominate the African market & if they want to compete favourably then they should have correspondents scattered across major cities in the continent. Besides if they must tell my stories then they should do so appropriately so also my local channels should tell international stories appropriately if they must do so.
@Iamkelgrin bullshit CNN isn’t even close to entering the African Market what are you talking about BBC and France 24/rfi dominate African news on the international market
@Iamkelgrin they’re not there to report on your stories they’re there to push either an agenda, report on news that will provide clicks and more revenues to their channels. It’s up to your local national news channels to favoribaly and correctly report on local news not aljazeera, BBC France 24 or CNN like wtf are you talking about
Correspondent from Chad🤔 what a report from al Jazeera
Poor Nigeria
everyone of you have a say about the collapse Of buildings in Nigeria, which almost 10 to 20 peoples life lost but you guys close your eyes on what happens to the world over covid pandemic which almost millions of people have lost their lives, is this not a problem of neglect of the world leaders to protect the world against the pandemic for providing the vaccine to all humans without obstacles, in my own opinion that also the corruption.
Wow shocking Legos has been sinking due to climate change. What is the lagos authorities doing about it to avoid another major disaster?? May their souls rest in peace. I hope they are able to find more survivors 🙏🤲❤
Poor infrastructure
It’s more than 50 people
House of cards…
This is the news you can see and published corrupted journalist the genocide going on in eastern Nigeria by the Nigeria soidler terrorist in BIAFRA land you did not see and published you all worship money over human life but know matter how you journalist try to hide the news from the world the 🌞 sun Biafra must shine and i i pray you realize that money is not everything
Why from Chad as big as Nigeria is
Poor building 🤭
Yes climate change did something right
Nigeria , the most useless country in the world.
What about the killings going in the south east of Nigeria???
What is the Breaking Nigeria?
Buildings collapse everyday somewhere in the world!
It is tragic and unfortunate, but these things happen!
In June, a similar thing occurred in Miami!
Sick foreign news, forever jaundiced by their bigotry!
People are STILL trapped but the state govt. is more interested in making speeches for the 📷… Shame, death toll on the rise
Oh my God..💔💔💔💔
