They are demonstrating against COVID-19 restrictions and longstanding economic problems.
The French government has called for calm.

You’re greatly oversimplifying things. A lot of these islands are tiny and have small populations. They would be unable to maintain a diverse enough economy to build any real wealth, and they would be defenseless in a military conflict. The people born on these small island territories also have the benefit of citizenship to whatever mother country governs them. There are pros and cons to everything. Not everything is “oppression”.

Problems with France… is not the same as problems with science… That these people can’t make this distinction… is part of the problem…
I’m French and let me tell you that the problem is far deeper than just COVID, for decades the French government has been treating these people like second class citizens, there has been many bad things happening in “overseas territories”, like the use of pesticides banned in France that contaminated the population and made the number of cancers skyrocket in Guadeloupe, the nuclear tests in French Polynesia, the pollution of rivers from gold mining in French Guyana, etc… I can totally understand why they want independence and if it were up to me they’d have it, the French government just won’t let them go because of strategic military bases when truly we could just pay them as independent countries to put our bases there and it’d be the same.
