Ukraine used to be Nuclear power country back in Soviet times and NATO didn’t panic but once Ukraine became independent 1991 Russia as usual began panic and required to dismantle Nuclear facilities in order restore peace between both neighbour countries

It was the US that panicked and didn’t trust nukes in brand new countries like Ukraine worrying they’d be sold on the black market to raise cash to help fund the new government or organized crime during a very turbulent time. It was because of nuclear proliferation. They had the same concerns in Russia itself but worked with them at the time to secure it when relations were good like they did with Ukraine. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. Most of the CIS countries sold off many warehouses full of surplus Soviet arms to western arms dealers injecting them into civil war conflicts especially in Africa, a winfall for oligarchs and gangsters. An independent Ukraine never had the means to maintain or run the command and control capability to operate any of those systems on its own let alone be able to afford any of it. A deal was signed to relieve them of this burden in exchange for full unquestioned independence and sovereignty which we all know how that went. Also they inherited an Air Force of more than 1000 planes 30 years ago. Now they don’t even have 90 working planes in the Air Force which are still relying on the last stocks remaining of surplus Soviet missiles and parts from the late 80s and early 90s. It’s the only country in the former USSR that has gotten poorer since 1991.
Ukraine had nuclear weapons, but Russia had the launch codes. In effect, Ukraine never had nuclear weapons it could actually use, so giving them up was a good money-saving measure, not to mention all the political points it scored. Btw, Ukraine still has active nuclear power plants, so it still is a nuclear power country.

I do understand Russian concerns but the Eastern block of countries are independent and can choose to associate with who they want. In the 70’s there were protests on taken back their country(s) and placing a more democratic government in. Most of these countries would choose to look west than east. And that is telling.

There is no problem of Russia with NATO or vice versa. There is a problem of Putin’s regime with democracy. Ukraine is following in small steps it’s path to western democracies and this is seen by Putin’s regime as an internal Russian problem. Ukraine changed completely its direction after 2014 Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. A powerful and democratic Ukraine might bring in Russian Federation what we saw in Kazakhstan or in Belarus some time ago. Remember what Putin said about colored revolutions. About NATO: NATO is expanding. That’s so wrong. Countries are joining NATO because they want, not because they are forced by NATO. NATO is a defensing organization, so there is no real threat to Russia and Putin’s regime knows that. Putin’s regime needs to keep away Ukraine by EU and NATO so it can survey. That’s the reality.

Why would the US or Ukraine want war? What ‘political goals’ would either party have?

Russia is afraid that if Ukraine were to join NATO and allow bases to be set up, it would put Russia in a very tough position. Just look at the map; the European part of Russia sits on the North European Plain, which is almost entirely flat and is devoid of any natural defensive features.
Another thing is that Russia’s two largest and most important cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg are very, very close to the border and throughout their history, they have been invaded from their western flank on many occasions; Hitler and Napoleon come to mind especially, and when one also takes into account that the vast majority of Russians live west of the Ural Mountains, it’s even worse.
They would be more than capable of securing their western flank under these potential circumstances, but it would cost them an arm and a leg to do so. How long could they keep up?

NATO was formed in 1949 at the Pentagon, to stop a Soviet invasion of Europe, it was a military alliance led by the US. Even though at the time, a devastated Russia was an ally and not remotely interested in expansion – Russia was so not interested in conflict, it even prevented Communist Revolutions in European countries such as Greece, and China, so as to avoid more war. In 1954 Russia even asked to join NATO and reunify East and West Germany but both were refused by the US who wanted to maintain the militarization of the area.
So, a Russian invasion never materialised, the Soviet Union collapsed, but NATO carried on existing, and finally got into its first war in 1995, where it began its trademark tactic of saving people by dropping tens of thousands of bombs on them.
But in terms of Ukraine…
Russia has deployed 100K troops near Ukraine several times over recent years, and its hasn’t been an issue.
However, Ukraine is strategically important for any invasion of Russia from the west, as demonstrated during WW2, which is why the US is interested.
And more recently it was the US who pulled out of a key nuclear treaty with Russia, aimed at preventing the proliferation of missiles. It is also, the only NATO country that engages in ‘nuclear sharing’ which it obviously will not admit with Ukraine until after the fact.
And following its defeat in Afganistan, its record defence budget, and disastrous domestic policy, its not hard to see where this is going…
As usual the people who will suffer most if this conflict develops will be the ones the US is claiming to want to save, while it engages in its imperial efforts to prevent Russian self determination in order to maintain its position as a global empire.

Nato can not attack, but only defend and counterstrike against an agressor when one of it’s member is being attacked first right?
That doesn’t mean individual nations , can join a war if they want.

Then why is Russia afraid of Nato “moving in”, but not of individual countries being able to join?
Since Nato would not do anything against Russia in the first place unless they do something first.

Having missiles ready near US borders is a violation of the Monroe Doctrine (it’s a western doctrine), it sparked the Cuba missile crisis, soviet missiles in Cuba (that wanted their presence) in response to missiles in Turkey it was handled with the same seriousness. Understand that West Ukraine isn’t separated from Russia by any geographic barriers, NATO don’t need to attack Russia to show off agression, it’ll bankrupt Russia militarely just to defend boarders and risk skirmishes. To avoid NATO’s presence in Ukraine is a Russia’s CORE objective and NATO can live without Ukraine but they have nothing to gain from accepting Russia’s terms. The US can end the conflict tomorrow but NATO does not care about Ukraine’s people or Russia’s people, a war would destroy both countries, drawn EU into an energy crisis and only benefit the US.

Understand this is contested land with Ukraine.. so with Russia doing nothing at all could mean ‘ sanctions’ just by possibly paying or cut off completely if Ukraine or NATO decide it’s not Russia’s

The facts are
Nato was warned not to make allies of gerogia and Ukraine or Russia would have no choice but to most likely start a war
And nato recently made Georgia a nato member and started moving closer to Ukraine
So naturally Russia took crimea as a response to Georgia joining nato
So yes the fault is with nato Russia is simply making good on things they already promised if nato crossed the line in the sand
You can’t hate on Russia for standing up for what they believe in , NATO is a threat and they are not trustworthy especially setting up shop on Russia’s doorstep , Putin has warned the world before and no one took him seriously

Conversely, a person bears moral responsibility for disobeying unfair laws… Putin demonstrates desperate, mentally unstable and fraudulent behavior. He exposes Russia to worldwide hatred and economic sanctions that the Russian people cannot afford… He does everything to preserve power – absolute power based on stolen elections, corruption, income inequality and murder… What he really fears is that liberal democracy takes root in Ukraine. With all the language and cultural ties that Ukrainians have with Russia, that’s an avenue for democracy to then spread into Russia and threaten Putin’s regime… and it’s like having an abusive psychotic boyfriend, from whom you unfortunately can’t move away. Of course the only solution is to stay calm and prepare to fight… of course one can fight without carrying a gun.. Ukraine is the people, not the land.. someday Russia will be free…..
