I started watching Graham few days ago. His content is so fun I just watch him for hours every day.
Did you break in though? 😅
I wonder if it’s hard to find work then since you wouldn’t be getting a degree
@marki the work in comp sci isn’t the same as IT
@Adrian-Ryan Acala how should I teach myself to code ? To get hired
The first job will be the hardest to get. Further jobs will be a lot easier since you already have experience. Note: despite the reputation, the top tech companies for SWE are largely college graduates, and most of them are in CS/engineering (with the high level employees commonly having PhD’s). You will find the higher concentration of non-CS or even non-college grads in lower tier companies / non-engineering companies.
I wonder if it’s hard to find work at a tech company when you look like your 12 years old 🤔
@MaL3K_XD , to be fair to the other side, I’m not sure how to break in. I got in through a college recruiting program. If I were to do it again though, I wouldn’t go to college and learn how to do web programming. Learn Spring and contribute to open source software. There’s plenty of nice people in programming that are willing to help. Just reach out.
It is also harder to take out a loan to cover expenses to devote yourself to teaching yourself
When is Graham going to go to college? He would do so well there.
Haha nah I’d rather watch YouTube
@Graham Stephan I’m with you
I was a computer science student and they started taking attendance to stop people from taking the class for free because you no longer need a degree to get a software job
if you want to work in FAANG you need a degree
@fakerfish what did the last Airbender ever do to you??
@fakerfish fake the degree, easy life easy money
Go to a public college and just ask permission. This is called auditing. No you don’t get college credit.
you can learn anything without having a degree, just ask your local electrician , carpenter or plumber. We just live in a world where smart people make money off of poor people. Especially with classes like greek mythology, spanish and photography being required for an engineer degree.
But when you apply for a job you can not say 😅 I have a degree in cs. I guess having one gives you and advantage.
I’ve done that at Stanford. You can just walk in and watch classes lol
You need to have a student ID to get into their buildings, though.
@Mark Carls I didn’t need any of that. I just walked in along with everyone else lol
Fun Fact MIT also has classes online for free and Michael is doing what’s called auditing. You can audit classes if you ask. lols. Most college libraries are public if you have a state id and ask before entering. 😀
I tried auditing a class once (as an actual student). I was told no, that it was unfair to the people who actually paid to be in the class.
@Mark Carls yeah some schools are full of crap. Auditing is rarely used nowadays since schools got extremely greedy.
Yup. In some cases you can skip the class and just buy the textbook. Books are amazing things. Not sure if many people still use them.
Technically, at a government-funded school – you’re not paying for the instruction or knowledge. Your taxes already did that. When you pay tuition, you’re paying for the credit, the official stamp of the course. It’s silly, but its true. So yes, you can go sit in and “audit” a course.
When I was getting my engineering degree, I definitely used Harvard’s free course resources to supplement my studies
It’s called auditing but I’m not sure if it’s free everywhere.
I wonder how many social justice warriors crash feminist studies classes?
hehe 🙂
Works for the careers that don’t require a degree. Not all are like this lol
Hi Garam have you heard of Squidgrow
Same here, Harvard & MIT MOOC free vids. I worked at a University for 13 years and sat in on whatever class I wanted to learn about. Usually asked the professor if it was ok, no need to sneak in.
I brought my friends to my college class before 🤣
Thought this was Ohgeesy
