Al Jazeera takes a look at the state of nuclear weapons in the world and the push for non-proliferation this month.
Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons and there is concern the country isn’t in a rush to reduce its arsenal.

Anti ballistic Missile systems and 90% success probability + Being stuck first.
If you have 1500 deployed Nukes and if you were to be struck first you might Lose 1000 nukes without firing them, what s left is 500 nukes fired (mostly from submarines) as a retaliation and with range limitation and anti submarine warfare + Anti ballistic Missile systems deployed all over the world and jamming only 50 nukes are sure to land.
So if were to be in a total disastrous and an annihilation scenario with all land bases and air based nuclear assets destroyed or disabled before their lunch (an impossible scenario) at least 50 to 100 nukes will land on the US.
In a realistic scenario, Russia can retaliate with 400 nukes sure to land on the US with 150 to 200 million deaths.
This with the fact that only 1500 deployed nukes are used with current Missiles not counting the 4500 stored and the 2500 tactical bombs currently decommissioning.
Nukes are now very costly to maintain so the disarmament trend will continue, The US has faar more deployed Missiles and 100 nukes more deployed.
After the cold war the 70000 soviet and US nukes were reused in industry and energy generation (recycled), the 4500 Russian stored nukes are both replacements for the currently deployed nukes and mostly nuclear fuel reserves (Plutonium) for power plants.

@Ntokozo Sibanyoni Well better have a pessimistic assumption than an optimistic one, also what I ment in the first catastrophic scenario, is that a success rate of 90% is assumed to be achievable because of the multilayered defense system, Patriot + Thaad ( + perhaps the Israeli ARROW 2/3 System) all over US bases, europe, Japan/S. Korea, US Pacific islands, Aegis system in US destroyers, Tracking/Jamming Satellites and over the horizon radars and the final Anti Ballestic system in mainland US and the next generation system being developed using Missile,kinetic and perhaps Laser energy.
If you see the big picture the 90% success rate is fairly achievable, the US has multiple chances to intercept a land based nuke.
+ Why invest dozens of billions of dollars if not hundreds in such systems/Strategies, if the success rate is not at least over 70%.
Bottom line, better to assume that only 1 in 10 missiles ( 50-60 missiles with 360-500 Nukes will strike) rather than the other way around.
Check an episode simulating a nuke war in Binkov’s battle ground or the infographic show, it’s fairy interesting.

Russian nuclear weapons are the most up to date(unlike the rest of their stuff). Since the fall of the Soviet union, Russian military weakened. Only way to maintain balance of global power was through nukes. So Russian nukes had to be as good as they can be.
