Italian police have arrested the country’s most wanted mafia boss, who had been on the run for 30 years.
Prosecutors say Matteo Messina Denaro is a boss of Sicily’s Cosa Nostra mafia.
Police on Monday morning swooped in on a private hospital in the Sicilian capital Palermo, where the 60-year-old was receiving treatment for an undisclosed medical condition, to make the arrest.
Messina Denaro has been sentenced in absentia to a life term for his role in the 1992 murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.
He also faces a life sentence for his involvement in bomb attacks in Florence, Rome and Milan the following year, which killed 10 people.

Actually it is the fault of overzealot enforcement of the government. Nowadays, more n more countries have legalize the use of drugs, prostitu and gambling. Mafia is just a business conglomerate who focus on these sector and nothing more. Yes! He’s been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in many murders cases and terrorists attacks/assassination cases. But he’s been a “latitante” (a fugitive) for some 30 years and was tried in absentia. Now he’s been finally caught and escorted to a secure undisclosed location (I guess to avoid any attack or demonstration at the site). The he will be assigned to a prison equipped for his “41bis” sentence (41bis being what is sometimes called “carcere duro”, literally “hard prison”, a regime of incarceration that doesn’t allow for contacts with the outside almost in any form and very limited contacts with other inmates). Though all of this will happen only if he’s found fit for prison (he’s got a cancer), if that’s not the cases he will spend his sentence in the hospital surveilled by police and/or military forces).
