Some people in Nigeria face losing their life savings as they struggle to exchange old banknotes.
The central bank introduced new notes last year and has already extended the deadline for the discontinuation of the old tender.
Millions of Nigerians may not be able to exchange their money by the extended deadline, the end of January 2023.

There is absolutely no reason to hasten the change. Digital money cannot be used by everyone. The internet access can be terrible even for people who do have digital access. This is not how you make a society cashless. You make cashless transactions accessible. It isn’t accessible in Nigeria.

The new Pound notes bearing King Charles picture will gradually replace the old ones over a 2-year period. How can you say 6 weeks is enough time to replace old notes in a country where nearly 70 million people are unbanked and have no access to cashless channels?
