Ukrainian officials in Bakhmut say there is intense street fighting in the besieged eastern city, but Russia has not taken control.
The declaration comes after Russia’s Wagner mercenary group said it had surrounded the city.
The remaining 3,000 civilians in Bakhmut — which once boasted a population of more than 73,000 — are living in shelters without access to gas, electricity or water.

There are even been reports that apparently there have been shootouts between Wagner Group mercenaries and regular Russian Army troops in Bakhmut after the Russian Ministry of Defense stopped supplying weapons to the Wagner Group (hence the Wagner Group has to buy their own weapons and equipment).
The Russian military seems to be divided into three parts. The regular Russian Armed Forces led by Sergei Shoigu, the Wagner Group mercenaries led by Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Kadyrovites led by Ramzan Kadyrov, all of whom seem to hate each other and are actively competing with each other while fighting Ukraine.
