P.S. Every honest person who is not a propagandist knows there was a civil war in Ukraine and the government in Kiev was attacking eastern Ukrainians, a government that came to power after a violent coup supported by the United States (and possibly instigated by the United States). Whether or not they have other motives, the stated motive of the Russians was to protect those eastern Ukrainians.
If your country is not engaged in a civil war that began after a violent coup, then Russia wouldn’t have that excuse.

@John Gilmer Don’t agree. (1) The sheer number and location of NATO countries will be a deterrent. Finland is better off in NATO, as that should keep them safer than if they were neutral (and us, too). Putin has shown clearly he can’t be trusted to honor any sovereign country or border. But he can’t be crazy enough to attack NATO. And (2), nobody gets to be neutral anymore. Threats like Russia need the full weight of the _entire_ planet united against them. Financially ideally, militarily if need be. It’s a good lesson for China to heed as well. It’s 2022, for god’s sake. Ya border is ya border. There are no more border disputes! And if you try one, you’ll have the entire planet against you. I think _that_ is the path to peace.

I can not disagree with this more. This is such a horrible thing for the future, and I hope Finland does not enter NATO. They have been a bastion of neutrality for years, and should stay that way. The re armament of Europe has major negative implications for the world going forwards. NATO should be shrinking not growing. I fear that politicians on the left and right are using the invasion of Ukraine to justify increasing military spending, which will either raise taxes for Europeans, or take away from existing social services.
Yep, the Europeans are not known to get along well with others…hence NATO. Based on their history, with an armed Europe it is only a matter of time before they fight.

I would not count to much on the swedish forces; but the ability to use swedish and finnish airspace will actually mean that the russians can’t sneak across Sweden and go low level and pass Jutland undetected. It is an old problem, because if you only observe the russians making landfall at Jutland there is a maximum of 5 minutes to scramble fighters and guide them in a tail chase to whack them – lets say it as it is: NOT ENOUGH.

Why is it so difficult for Sweden and Finland to make a binding formal commitment that they will not provide funds and arms to terrorists that killed over 50 thousand people or attempted a bloody coup to overthrow the government of another Nato member? I guess members of an alliance should be able to trust each other just like in a marriage otherwise how can they make a commitment to risk their own security to defend the security of another member state?
