Companies looking to export gallium and germanium from China now require a license to do so, under new rules introduced by Beijing. These metals are key to technologies like semiconductors. But how big of a deal are China’s new restrictions? CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal reports.
What are gallium and germanium, and why is China restricting their exports?

I’d like to see whose downfall will it be
If it’s not a big problem, why is such a commotion in the media…… ?
are this guys stupid or pretending to be, the USA cannot import any of those compounds because the USA does not make chips, they steal them from Taiwan a Chinese protectorate,
people in USA are so full of themselves they think this BAN is going to be used as a bargaining chip with them, do they even realize that China is not going to be talking to them , but JAPAN and Taiwan. The USA has no say in the Cjip manufacturing business their business is war and sowing devisions in other peoples business
soxx down 5%?
Why is a China Town in every American city? Is American Town in every Chinese city?
中国人终于学会了西方国家的说话方式:
1,为了国家安全
2,不针对任何单一国家
3,确保产品不得使用在军事领域
Well done China. Nazi US regime need to be taught a big lesson
Surprised with a Royal Flush?😅
Good now US and Canada will produce these and we no longer will depend on CPP..good riddance!!
Have you an idea how Ga and Ge are produced? Its not like “oh yea, lets make 100 tons of galium this week!”
Nothing happens, USA have no money right now 😂
Let the prices hike. It’s good for the earth and our future generations.
I wouldn’t worry much.America will produce it for its own security
it need to take 3-5 years to make supply-chain, ASML and TSMC can’t wait for that.
Simple solution for simple minds. Geez, you think the American think tanks filled with the smartest Americans didnt think of that? Yeah just produce your own! 👍
@Odithyir It won’t be long before you call them idiots
In 2021, the global production of gallium resources was 430 tons, of which China accounted for 420 tons, accounting for 97.67%. The production of gallium resources in Japan, South Korea, and Russia was 3 tons, 2 tons, and 5 tons, respectively.
China’s metal gallium reserves are also the world’s largest, reaching 190000 tons, accounting for 68% of the world’s total reserves.
I cannot imagine how their radars, chips, and lasers would operate if the United States and Japan lacked these raw materials.
China has finally launched a counterattack against the bullies, great!
I am enjoying the show
The largest importing country for both elements is Japan. US is only no.4. This move from China is only a warning shot and targeting Japan. China trying to beat the most faithful lap dog in front of it’s master.
Thanks to US grand scheme to kill itself.
It will be short-term disruption to the US supply chain (high cost) but not long term damage. However, the duration of disruption may be sufficient for China to develop its technology to catch up
i don’t know if US can stand halting production of F35 for 2 years… my feeling is US will fold… or at least US defence companies will fold and pay their 12 billion dollar fine…..
US will take 20 years to establish a rare earth industry chain, and China will break through lithography technology in 5 years, China won
Maybe the US can’t afford to wait another 20 years without rare earths
Look, the days when US could unilaterally impose sanctions and economic penalty on other countries without hurting itself are gone. They should have understood this. Now the global supply chain has become what it is due to the unseen hand, namely, market force. Capitals goes where it makes the most profit, production goes to where it could produce most efficiently and cost-effectively, consumption goes to where the most dispensable income is at disposal. This is natural force and movement, no human intervention could alter the course.
China bow down, 3 country india, America, western alliance. So! why worry.. The world are watching. Even Chinese people scare his country.
Separating from the Chinese economy becomes urgent!
Where can you find the substitute raw materials 😊
keep dreaming😊
China:enjoy yourself😊
Other countries have tons of zinc and bauxite…this are just by products of processing those.. it will just open lots of other options for this counties😂😂
so in order to obtain these two by product, other countries would has to build entire manufacturing system that produces a main product that they don’t need, in order to get the byproduct, use your brain and think is this going to work
@Lim chea ting do you think only china manufacturers this only 💀!! It is currently largest producer but only 28% of global production 🤣🤣.. and Australia have which is part of nato+ and quad have highest deposit of this 2 .. if in only 2 years west diverted their all gas and oil dependency from russia to middle East and canada .. then this is less then half of that problem.. and those processing machinery china don’t produce..west does.. china just bought them in huge volume and ramp the production.. now others will do same and already mous are being signed to avil those machines in cheap rates to other countries to divert supply of this from china to others asap basic.. you should have read what german finance ministry said yesterday evening about adding 200% levy on chinese products to enter euro zone 💀.. world abandoning china.Same like all existing russia
@SinneR you might wanna get your numbers and facts check again, China owns 96% of the production, another 3%, sadly owned by Russia. Also other countries can always produce on their own, but in order to get these two BY product, you would need to build an entire production line to produce something you dont need, and guess why those manufacturing moved to China at the first place?
@SinneR Good luck 🙂
US and its allies: No more beef to be sold to China because of national security. China: Ok, no more cows to be sold to you lot.
The hypocrisy of the US is in the present form of US hegemony since World War II.
China is not interested in the US strong-arm tactic to enforce full compliance to US interest with regime change has been the modus operandi all over the world.
The US is a bully and is a hegemonic power and by its own exceptionalism creates chaos and destruction and imposed regime change all over the world to force other countries to submit to US interests and US foreign policy.
The US is only interested in advancing its own agenda to suit US interests and US foreign policy and is not interested in China interests by trying to contain China into nonentity.
This is what the US has been doing to the rest of the world interfering with other countries internal affairs and implemented regime change to suit US interests and US foreign policy.
China always develops its relations with the US in accordance with the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.
At the same time, China safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests.
China does not shy away or flinch from the competition.
China is against defining the entire China-US relations by competition and seeking containment and suppression in the name of competition.
China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the US in bilateral and multilateral fields on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.
US cannot ask for communication and cooperation while interfering in China’s internal affairs and harming China’s interests.
China is always against words and deeds that fan the fire and intensify conflicts.
The US refusal to allows China to participate in space exploration and the US even passed law like the Wolf Amendment in 2011 to banned China from engaging in direct, bilateral cooperation regarding space exploration and scientific experiments.
China continue international cooperation is a new beginning for the world outside the US to do scientific experiments and collaborating with one another on scientific discoveries.
China has come a long way and has been making steady progress in its space program.
China Space Station gives China an avenue for scientific research in space environment.
The Chinese Space Station is fully open to international researchers, and guides for the open solicitation of research proposals will be regularly issued under bilateral cooperation agreements.
The US is also trying to destroy China chip industries just like the US is banning and prohibiting China in space industries.
The US is trying to strangled and ultimately destroy China chip industries from completing and bypassing the US in high-end technology.
The US has been trying to freeze China out of the high end semi-conductor industry with all kind of dirty means to prevent China from completing with the US on the highly lucrative technology.
The US like to portrays other countries as an antagonists and as well as an adversary when the US face with competition in chip technology which the US regard it as their domains and sphere of influence and will not accept any competition from another country.
The US has been trying to freeze China out of the high-end semi-conductor industry with all kind of dirty means to prevent China from completing with the US on the highly lucrative technology.
The US tries to kill Huawei on the ground of national security threats.
The US undermine and sabotage Huawei through launching extrajudicial probes and even put out a provisional US extradition request on Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou which the US are alleging that Huawei violated the US’s sanctions by selling American equipment to Iran, via shell companies set up by Ms Meng.
The US announced financial fraud charges against Ms Meng. Ms Meng is under house arrest in Canada on the request by the US. The effects of sanctions cause Huawei US$30 billion annual loss in its smartphone business thereby losing its profitable cellphone and telecommunication business.
Whenever the US tries to impose sanctions and bans China from developing chip technology, China will have to work hard to build its own technology to counteract and to redress the US actions in order to save China own industries and development.
The US is using its national security strategy and sanctions to forbid China from advancing into high end development and technology. The US is implementing laws to hold on to its high end technology by preventing other countries in competing with US that threatened its monopoly over advanced technology that is the highest form of technology available.
The US is trying to prevent China from surpassing them in chip technology by imposing all kind of restriction and sanctioning China in accumulating advanced technology.
China will have to work hard to build its own technology to counteract and to redress the US actions in order to save China own industries and development.
Nothing change when the US felt threatened in losing control of the chip industries, and tried to use all kind of sanctions including banning chip sales to China and implementing the Chips and Science Act- The Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors and Science Act of 2022 (CHIPS Act), signed into law on August 9, 2022, is designed to boost US competitiveness, innovation, and national security.
The law aims to catalyze investments in domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity.
The US even tries to force South Korean’s Samsung and Taiwan’s TSMC to build their semiconductor industries to jump-start its own high tech industries to the US.
The US force other countries from cooperating with China with regard to manufacturing and selling machines in manufacturing high technology chips. The US is making a mockery of its own market mechanism by using laws in curbing competition from other countries.
B’s America’s Monopolies companies weaponizing every sector that they can.
There is a saying in China and it goes like this : “Frog in the bottom of a well”. Americans are the frogs…. And they don’t even realize it! It is quite sad to be honest!
The death blow is Apple.
CHINA OWN IT & HAD EVERY RIGHT WHAT TO DO WITH IT.👍👍👍👍👍
Chinese people are becoming more and more polite. They finally learned to communicate in a language that Americans could understand. Americans simply couldn’t understand those boring condemnations before.
US wants to decouple and derisk, so China restricts them to help US to achieve US’s goal of decoupling faster…..
to Americano, yes means no, no means yes, polite equals weak; peace equal afraid; begging equals “you want to be friend?”.
the only language the US and its western allies understand is power
Imagine they can even insult Xi , the head of state of the most powerful country in the world … yet Xi remained silent . Since patience unseen or unheard of in the history of Mankind. Truly patient. Even now the ban is baby steps only .
Surprised pikachu face
UAss wants to decouple and de-risk. China agrees by making this small move. Over to you, UAss for your next move
Americans like to play zero sum game. Animal Kingdom vs Civilization.
USA: We need decouple with China!
China: it’s against Free Trade, not good for world economy.
USA: but it can hurt your economy.
China: it hurt yours too.
USA: We need de-risk with China!
China: speed up!
USA:⋋_⋌
What is China trying to imply by placing restrictions on the exports of gallium and germanium? Is that a way for China to obliquely hint that it no longer wishes to maintain good relations with the US?
ohhhhhhhhhhhhh
USA now crying “Economic Terrorism”
For Western countries The bad news is that gallium imported from China accounts for 80% of US imports The good news is that imported goods from China only account for 58% of the total imports from the United States and can be imported from other countries The bad news is that regardless of gallium or error, Russia ranks second, occupying almost all the remaining shares The good news is that Ukraine has the third largest production in the world in this area, and after investment and development, it can fully meet the needs of the United States and its allies The bad news is that Ukraine’s production area is located in Donetsk Luhansk, Russian occupation of Zaporizhzhia Oblast The good news is that other countries besides China, Russia, and Ukraine also have a small amount of production The bad news is that Iran and North Korea are closely following China, Russia, and Ukraine in terms of production ranking The good news is that the United States has the world’s largest storage capacity The bad news is that it will take several years from production to shipment, with small-scale shipments expected in 2027 and large-scale shipments expected in 2030. During this period, China has already conquered the manufacturing of 28nm or even 14nm chips
In short US needs China but China does not need US . Period.
But docile China is just too kind and prefers the peaceful path as US down China will also lose some money . Funny part is China loves money more than pride.
But if you looks from the china perspectively, the good are bad and the bad are good 😊😊
@Issac Tian ya, but most people are missing the point, China doesn’t really care about the “chip war” whether China make 20% of the chip or 50% of the chip doesn’t really matter to China that much since most of the product that use these chip are exported anyway. so China doesn’t really “need” to boost it chip manufacturing rapidly, especially when China already produce more chip than US does. (most of the chip will be produce in Asia anyway, which mean China has more leverage as it is in RCEP and US is not).
what matter to China is US atittude to continue selling to the Taiwan rebels weapons that are created using Gallium from China. if you were to recall, just a week ago, Raytheon CEO was on the channel talking about how his company “needs China” supply chain, this is what he is really talking about, he knew this was going to happen, but of course he can’t mention his worries directly since it hasn’t happened yet but he is clearly hinting to the US government that if US were to decouple, Raytheon won’t be able to make it most advanced missiles anymore, that decoupling from China was not viable for the US defence industry. this restriction was the most direct and easiest way for China to stop US from selling weapons to rebels in Taiwan. as well as force Raytheon to pay the “penalty” fine equal to twice the money it made from Taiwan.
that’s what it is really about, but you won’t see the media tell you this. remember this is “export restriction”, not an embargo like what US is doing. they may look similar and related but it different, US is using national security as an excuse to block other countries from exporting to China, whereas China is actually demostrating how national security “derisking” should be done by limiting export to defense contractors.
Nice way to drive “them” crazy 😅
Darn China! why do they have to be such Arse just because we are?
What would we see if the Chinese government stipulated that only chip factories located in China could obtain raw materials at will?
This will make semiconductor companies that intend to set up factories in the US return to China. 😂
To late, the advancement of semiconductor technology has gone beyond those minerals China limits, making this ploy null and void.
keep dreaming
Both can play the same game
When I see these in English, I thought they are imply Gallic & Germany. If EU is going to De-coupling ?
Bully china so many years. Isn’t it deserved for US?
When you’re invited to her show, you have to say something that the host is interested in. Most countries in the world also produce oil. According to the logic of CNBC experts, Russia restricts oil exports to unfriendly countries, which has limited impact on the world. Don’t worry, today’s high inflation is unreal, and CNBC followers are immune.
Germanium is banned from mining for national security reason in the U.S. Only one site is licensed to do so. The U.S has been filling the needs from buying it cheap from else where.
Gallium is fun to play with and it’s dirt cheap. So, with the export ban, people being affected are actually students in school not the manufacturing world. It’s like helium shortage, only recreation market was affected. Even if gallium price goes up 10 times, it will only show minimal effect on production cost.
You have nothing to worry about then
Gallium is used to make missile and radar… no Gallium = no military grade radio emitters needed for radar to function…. = all US weapon becomes dumb bombs…. China don’t really care about economic retaliation because the chip war doesn’t hurt them much to begin with. this is really about punishing Raytheon for exporting to Taiwan and forcing them to pay their couple of billion dollar fine (China demand double the revenue made in Taiwan to get off the blacklist), Raytheon CEO statement last week about not being able to leave the chinese market is really about this, he knew this was going to happen and is preparing the market for if his company decide to pay that fine…
this will make US company think twice about exporting weapon to Taiwan.
Finally, China has learned sth from the US.
China finally realized that the only language the US and its western allies understand is power and coersion.
yes, same language😀
It is good to see both sides restricting each other, or make all sides uncomfortable to develop faster.
World technology development has been too fast, just too fast, and in some way exploiting the earth resources too much.
If the world development is curbed, in many way it helps preserve the earth. Make the human who live on it less stress with the ever changing of technology.
Every 6 months to one year changing mobile phone is crazy, too much electronic waste. Very bad for the entire world.
Not every man is able to catch up with neck breaking speed.
Let’s slow down everything and make life a bit more comfortably, and happier for everyone.
You can always count of the US media to dumb down the audience. Example is…. The annual trade is only $300M… Small. But reality is, the compound is crucial. The total annual output is less than 1M kg. Kg not tons.
The host like the presenter are booth talking crap. You need the same size like China to produce the same capacity that China does and can take 15 years and cost billions 😂😅 you are screwed Americans and Europe 😂😂
The bad news is that China accounts for 96% of the reserves of gallium and 68% of the reserves of germanium. Good news, other countries also have it, bad news, this country is Russia, good news, Ukraine also has it, bad news, the eastern region of Ukraine has been occupied by Russia. Gallium and germanium are the main raw materials for chips and high-energy materials, which cannot be replaced. There are a total of 240000 tons of them in the world. Without these two elements, Stepper chip enterprises will continue to close down. How can you cook without materials? Let Americans use air to cook. The stock in the United States will run out in two months at most. 😂😂😂😂
well , this is just beginning , Rare earth materials, Urea, Penicillin even Fentanyl , China has too many cards on the hand.
Trepça 🇦🇱
Good discussion. Very clear explanations on Ge, Ga.
USA:Kneel down and lend me some money China:Hey, I thought you abolished slavery 200 years ago
Why do the news people call this a tit for tat war ? All the escalation was from one side.
US and all her lapdogs can ask India for all these raw materials as India wants to replace China in everything except toilets. Surely India can do it. 😁🤣😂
🤣🤣
US was the one-sided bullying others while it’s mouth always carries the words of free trade.
So , nothing to worry about.
China need to do more for it own security , ban all materials made big company return to China
European big companies already go to China.
This European companies cannot make profit enough from their factory in Europe. Energy cost become higher.
It costs too much to operate their factories in Europe, so they move to China.
Without these two materials, the chip cannot be made, and the lithography machine is a waste product😂😂😂😂
USA:it‘s OK,we can get it from Russia😂,don’t worry,China is a paper Dragon😝
Russia : Who are you? Do we know each other? 🙄
Gallium and Germanium Yuan is coming!!!!
Gallium and germanium are needed to produce weapons. Gallium and germanium are used in night vision devices, thermal imaging systems, and lasers, which are important for most military applications. Both materials are also needed in making chipsets and fibre optics products.
China produces 94% of gallium and 83% of germanium.
US can buy them from China’s main competitor, Russia.
More restrictions are expected coming from China on the US. For a long time, I thought China would remain inaction and stay a sissy like the China of the Opium War.
you dont ask, if you ask. it is national security reason😂
when you see “😂” immediately suspect bot
Lets wait & see.
Why? Coward China just reacting in a baby move . China has a host of measures that can easily make USA history but not doing it .
China is super super patient and even insulting Xi did not get a reaction.
Unimaginable when Yellen is going to China crying for help..
US is getting a taste of its own medicine! 😂😂
To China, if US and allies want to sink it, then let’s sink together
China did it for National Security reason for fear US will us Gallium to build weapons against China….
They asked China “How do you make semi conductor chips without lithography machine”?. Now China replying them “How do you make semi conductor chips without Gallium and Germanium”?. It doesn’t feels good to taste your own medicines, right?. By using political oppression to sanctioned more then 300 Chinese private enterprises? Not a single evidence shows Huawei is a national threats, yet multiple and ironically proved phone tappings and Apps algorithms are the real threat, because they identified user through pupil dilution. Ah, is anyone find it preposterous?. The reversed psychology is not working anymore. As the proverb said: “Don’t play with Fire or you’ll gets burn”. “What goes round comes back round, what goes up must comes down, do to others and it will do unto you”. Who started the trade war in the 1st place?. Well, let the games begin!!!.
The price of the material will simply skyrocketing.
你伤害了我,怎么可能一笑而过?
China is Goku ,Russia is Vegeta, America is Frieza, Now China is gathering Spirit Bomb, Need all earth people energy support 🙌
Yes U.S dont import a lot of gallium and germanium in terms of dollars but the affect to the whole high tec industries is huge and consequence is either manufactories cant make their product anymore or they have to pay skyrocket price for gallium and germanium which will lose their product competitiveness on the market. Can someone talk to Biden about it coz i dont want to spent more money on cellphone or computer anymore.
So what get it from Canada! Bull, China is not self sufficient and India has new discoveries in mining minirals.
India has the best minerals. So did Canada.
U can take germanium it off cow 💩
Canada has the best source of gallium .. it’s called 🐂💩
None of your business, india
What do you think the Proxy war is about?
It is time now that China helps to stop US from making more military equipment by banning these minerals. It is for a better world for us who desire world peace and better living envionment for our children and their children. No more production of military hardware. Stop the US MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. The world does not need it.
Other nations will move forward with this industry leaving China without an export market. When they resume exporting there will be no market for them.
😂😂😂 china doesn’t export it dummy . China owns the technology used to create it
What are u smoking
GERMANium belong to german 😌
Nice shot against US
How can I spread my videos to those who are interested in learning Chinese? Murmur abracadabra?
I’ve made many videos for an illustrated account of Chinese characters in a funny way.
About 3000 Chinese characters cover 99% characters in newspapers and books. From my previous videos you can learn about 400 common characters.
There are about 120 commonly used Chinese character radicals. From my previous videos, you can learn about 80 basic radicals.
I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture, and many years studying Chinese culture and jokes. My native language is Chinese.
Sit back and prepare for the next move from China, this is only the beginning. Chinese simply don’t trust the politicians in DC, they are preparing for the unthinkable.
Well 2 can play the game…it’s not only American that can punch China. They can punch back. When China does that the West call it wolves warrior diplomacy. I call it let them have a taste of American own medicines.
China’s Xi Jinping suddenly claimed the small Japanese islands of the Senkaku Islands as his own.
China’s Xi Jinping printed counterfeit Japanese JCB cards, causing confusion among Japanese financial institutions and merchants.
And because the world has realized China’s tyranny, China withdrew from Xi Jinping’s One Belt, One Road Initiative.
China’s Xi Jinping erased the information of the people involved in the Wuhan market and their families, and concealed the synthesis and leakage of SARS-CoV-2 and its spread to the world.
No worries. US FED can print gallium and germanium as dollars.
China made a mistake, and now it’s pinching the heart of the United States
De coupling 😂😂
The US shoots their own foot all the time.
There are minds out there who are suggestibg US should cooperate, co-exist, work together, … with China.
The world is big enough for both of them and more.
Why the US is obssessed with world domination ? That is Selfishness, Greed, arrogance, … Adjectives that decent people and families don’t value.
If both countries cooperate , the whole humanity benefits.
China is willing.
China never wanted to dominate the world. Just want to Progress and raise the living standard of its own people and on the way other nations progress too.
US is the problem in this planet.
Spending Trillions in wars, meanwhile hundred of thousands of homeless in the US.
Over a hundred thousand die from drug overdose every year.
Over forty thousand die from gun shootings every year.
Horrible. This is the richest country in human history.
“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face” this is just the beginning, we got all the toys West will enjoy sanctions of. Lithium, solar products, rare earh material, US debts, raw materials of medicine etc. GJ for provoking us, we Chinese finally get enough of your bulling now you will see what we are capable of. No mercy.
oh no.
China is just a copykat following the west to PROTECT NATION INTERESTS. Goodjob China . Just 2 items they already panic Huhuhu✌✌✌
US and allies ban the core machines for making bread while China ban the core raw material flour. Sounds fair.
So who won and who lost?
Can we says US reap what it sows.
It’s Germanium
finally chinese government know how to use “National security”
buy a new phone before price go up
Racist Narcissistic dictators policing around the world stop lying about it. Your illegal Monopolies arrogance crusader mentality is a problem. So you can’t trust anything Americans and its allies say. Why do business with America and its allies when they’re trying to control your development??? People want peace, not warmongers, debt and oppression systems, Kangaroo courts, military industrial complex, weaponizing every sector that they can get their colonial hands on , the illegal Constitution, prison complex, and illegal policing around the world. Must be disbanded. Please read James Hart Stern’s book I’m proud of being involved in this project 😎 remember it’s the asian-pacific not the Caucasian Pacific, time for change peace not warmongers devils.👹👹
