It happened in rural area where the Chinese building codes were shabby and the building would collapse quickly built with just mud bricks and no reinforcement to the buildings in a seismically active earthquake zone.

5.9 is pretty big. Remember the scales are logarithmic.
Meaning magnitude 6 is 10 times of magnitude 5 which also means it is 100 times stronger than a magnitude 4.
You feel a good jolt with magnitude 4 already. Magnitude 6 is about 100 times that.

I was in the area about half a month ago. The area hit is really isolated. The villages are made out of rather basic buildings. Some or at least most homes are built by the villagers themselves. Enforcing a building code means they may not have the money for a home, given how impoverished they are. Earthquakes seldom happen at this scale around their area. Have a little sympathy – don’t go bashing on building codes. Landslides will happen because of the mountains surrounding it. Really sad to see this happen to them.
Very sad because it affected the poorest people in China. Many in these villages are children and the elderly.
