The Department of Corrections in California is testing a new model aimed at rehabilitation in hopes to lower violence behind bars and cut down the rate of reoffending after release. NBC’s Steve Patterson visited a Valley State Prison to see how the state is implementing the changes.

#California #Prison #Rehabilitation
Unbelievable….. New way for humans to correct their emotions & behavior.
The old dehumanize, humiliation and stop independence & thinking for themselves has worked so well.
I like how they pretend they don’t want them to re offend. Prisons are for profit. They need repeat business. Until no one profits from prison then nothing will change. Nice try though.
From grooming kids to grooming horses.
Wow! Hopefully it will work
oooooh…”it sucks” alright.
This is a Better Way for Us to Go with those desiring rehabilitation
ty so much. PEOPLE MUST CONSIDER HOW SOCIETAL RE-CONDITIONING IS VITAL
Most people go to prison and come out with zero resources forcing them to recommit the same type of crimes over and over again.
This is really cool! What a great way to rehab these broken individuals
It sounds like a positive plan. I hope it works..
this is still worse than norway prisons..in norway you have a room for yourself you don’t have to share it with 7 others
If family’s, schools, and society was more supportive beginning when everyone was a youth, this same concept would probably reduce crimes in the first place.
Exactly
60 minutes did a story on a program like this in Germany years ago. This is nothing new. It makes a lot of sense. It really works!
Great
Prison admin: “We’re not in the punishment business.”
Tax payers: 😕
Now this is a great start to prison reform
We’ve known for decades that our prison system is a failure. In countries where they treat inmates like human beings, the crime rate drops. We cannot be cruel and inhumane and expect people to behave correctly. The punishment is being locked up. To add cruelty to punishment says more about us as a society than it does about felons. Horses are perfect. They are big and strong, but sensitive and intuitive. They have a spirit that imparts a sense of peace…all animals bring humanity…they help us all to be better people. 🌹
Our system is designed to break people. If we want to be safe, we need to *heal* people.
Scandinavian countries have been on this model.
Yep, another feel good approach that will be an abject failure in 20 years.
>abject failure in 20 years
Weird way to refer to the system we’ve had in place now for the last 20 years.
@@aglis_ I’ve worked in the system for over 30 years. I know the fail points. This sort of feel good stuff has been tried, especially in California.
If who is selected to go there are already judged less violent, it sort of deletes the lack of violence there…however, if it acts as a good step to stopping institutionalized effects, violence, etc., then it does, and should be expanded.
What’s the return on investment for prisneyland? I wonder if it’s higher than most private prison 🙃
I lived in Norway. It seems crazy but the system works.
It’s about time our country started treating prison as a place to reform and rehabilatate instead of a revolving door with no hope for anyone (inside and outside including families)! Will it work for everyone, no. Will it help men and women who want to find a way out and the resouces to do it, yes indeed! Well done California, well done!
This is the way it should be!!
And this is why they keep offending. Why not break the law if you get 3 meals a day, cable TV and more opportunities than we got on the outside. If opportunities like these were available to ppl on the outside, then we wouldn’t have ppl going to prison for them. This is bs. Commit a crime and have a nice life in prison. That’s why they reoffend.
No more studying this cocept! It works in Scandinavia, it works here. It makes complete sense to anyone who understands human behavior. Just think if we applied this education model in schools in low income areas. Create environments that prevent the problems of crime in the first place. It’s called HOPE. Start with teaching kids to do what the live in life, not that college is the only answer! The answer is to make money and success doing what you love.
Only thing Pedos get early release and illegal immigrants get better living conditions than the inmates. Yayyy California
Wow it only took a century for people to realize that putting “bad people with people who may have just made a mistake”
Has a negative effect on rehabilitation .
You should try this on Juveniles’ Iam 74 and was in lancaster industrial school for girls back in the 60s an basically that is how it worked it taught you skills then they stopped it
and they started foster homes which don’t work in my opinion. that is the Government for you Lancaster was in Massachusetts
Also you need to vet who you hire well beforehand please don’t hire these guys to yale Prinston Columbia LOL
Locking people up and throwing away the key never did anybody any good. I like this new approach.
Well, as long as they aren’t weight training and power lifting, I guess.
The biggest problem right now is that we send people off to prison, make them do their time and get their punishment, but do nothing to move towards resolving what got them to prison in the first place. Behaviors, decision making, mental illness, lack of having a skilled trade which in turn, gives them no purpose. So the offenders leave and go back right out and do what they know best, and reoffend. People need a purpose. People need to be given a chance. I feel like the prison incarceration rate is so high, because of poor decisions we made in the ’50s ’60s ’70s. The school systems, the gang violence are all repercussions of our own often race-based and misguided actions
As good as it is there’ll always be that one guy who will want to go back no matter how good they learned in
Separation from society IS the punishment!!!
Honestly it’s cool but if we make prison light……Young people like 17 yr olds aint going to fear prison…free housing for others….
Progressive. COLD
lol useless . you cant rehabilitate murderers and grapist
This made me tear up because when i was in the army, i realized we were treated very similarly as prisoners. And when i got out of training and into the real world, i was soooo weird. Thankfully, i knew what being normal looked like and i eventually got back to it, but if i had never known normal, i would still be “off”. Idk how to explain it but a good example would be, i used to run everywhere because thats what the army trained me to do. Normal people dont run from their kitchen to their front room. But i ran because walking was too slow. Idk its silly things but it matters. And if youre weird enough for too long, you get outcasted. I read this article about trash baboons or something like that and basically all these alpha monkeys were killed off from eating poisoned trash and all that was left were the ones who werent allowed to eat the trash. Anyways, the group of monkeys became very kind and stress free and anyone that joined the group (alpha mentality or not) were showed how to behave correctly and not so hostile. If you get enough good people in a group, it doesnt matter how bad you were, you wont be “bad” anymore. Especially in situations where its very concentrated like a prison. You can essentially rewire their dna for good or for bad.
Smart it’s were there is darkness light. Despair hope I think it could work.
CDCR is a joke!
God, I hope this works. It really makes sense, so hopefully 🙏
Wow taxes well spent. Actually the first good thing I’ve seen come out of California in a long time.
Oh…so a rehabilitation facility…the way it’s supposed to be vs a designed business plan
W
People need to understand. That the punishment isn’t prison it’s self, it’s being taken out of society and away from your loved ones. I hope this program is successful! I hate the American prison system, to barbaric!
I was a lifer doing a 16 to life sentence. I spent the last 4 years of my 18 yrs incarcerated down in VSP. I was granted parole in October 2017. It’s been over 6 years and thanks to the programs, help, and education that I was provided with in prison,, I haven’t relapse again!!
This is awesome!
Cdcr. The name has been there since the begining of time. And now they want to use the. Rehabilitation. America is trash
91% of people held in the US are held in for profit prisons. It’s by design. 30+% of Alabama’s black male population cannot vote. Many of them pulled off the street as teens. 🤦♂️
Learn how to Grow Food.Good Work California.
Yeah…..no soft on crime policies and turning prison into a taxpayer funded vacation destination
pretty good. not as good as europe
That is definitley not an electric fence.
The good news is there’s nobody in there because the let everyone go.
Prison sucks regardless. News Anchorman. 🤔🤦
I’m all for this
Amazing
Sweden’s solutions are not applicable here.
Some people this may help,,but predator in there will have a field day,, part of prison is to protect society from uncivilized behavior
Wow. More of this
Why doesn’t every state have one of these rehabilitation prisons?
Crime in Commiefornia is about to skyrocket, criminals will no longer feel there’s any consequences for their actions
There actually doing society a solid by allowing these folks this access to different reform options
I believe we should rehabilitate. People are humans that were surrounded by bad influences sometimes at such a early age. I encourage education, resiliency training, and love. People shouldn’t be given up on. People who have been hurt by others from violent crimes will have their own opinions and that’s theirs to have but other than that. Why not help someone.
Why aren’t these programs implemented on the front end before people end up in prison instead of on the back end ❓
This works in Sweden and Norway. They have amenities that most citizen don’t have and that’s why their crime rate is low.
Prison Reform and Youth Education is top priority for our nations. Help get these fathers into a purposeful life and back home to their kids so we can stop this cycle together.
big step in getting closer to the ideal (aka Nordic countries). About time.
We are all prisoners to the mouse 🐭 😅
This is really important! The best thing would be for our country to invest in widespread proactive measures so families and individuals aren’t impoverished, have access without shame to mental health and health care, and can grow up in a country that offers equitable opportunities for everyone. It’s much more difficult to rehabilitate people who have a life of trauma than those who don’t. If we can’t do that, then please let our prisoners have the opportunity to experience incentives that hopefully will let them grow and feel worthy.
Sny prison
W prison
The people that think this is good are the same people that were never put in time out or told no when they were kids. Prison is punishment. Period
Prison should be a punishment and a rehabilitation process, make it like school 🙏
Edit: You’re there to take full advantage of the services provided to teach you valuable skills to function in society.
If you don’t want to get better/ show no signs of change, then its normal prison for you.
Taxpayer money is already wasted, why not invest in a better society that doesn’t profit off incarceration
There is hope
Prison isn’t meant to punish…. Lol
what a lost cause
“Nice Stuff” 😂😂😂😂😂
😅omg the librals want prison to be summer camp..
That was jap5 in the class😂😂😂
We see you Jap5!!!
why would you want to leave? to go live on the street?
Joke
Wow! I prayed for this around Christmas time🎉
how do we fund it, how do we measure success? if we scale it up they’re gona have to develop a sustainable way to pay for it, they should make inmates work 8 hrs a day (after training) and then pay/tax them; then on the side provide leisure.
That’s the problem
Most of the prisons treat it like a business. They make money . They don’t wanna help these guys , they want them back . This however is right way to do it .
Wonder how many schools / rec centers could’ve been built instead of continuing to invest in a system that has been proven time and time again not to work …
If you think being separated from your family and society isn’t a punishment, you’re crazy.. this could work if they make it a reward for good behaviors and not just let everyone participate
This is the kind of progress we need! Let’s goooo
Careful, republicans are gonna get wind of this prison now because millions now know about it, and spin it against California
I’m glad people in the comments see this as a benefit instead of people being treated like animals. Offenders with nonviolent backgrounds and good behavior should be treated with respect.
shid… they still call you convict down at Parchman.
Rather than rehabilitation, the state should focus on restitution.
Justice is best served If a criminal is forced to work off the personal debt he owes to the injured party.
In the process he might acquire a work ethic and learn skills more marketable than brushing horses or making license plates.
Rehabilitation includes addressing isolation (FAMILY)
Having inmates train service animals is such a genius move! It’s so simple!
Steam boat willy goes brrr
Free jap5
Wednesday is Prime Rib day!
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
