That man have a choice not to go there and he did.
People who die for doing unnecessary things are not pitiful. It was his decision to go there knowing the risks and he made it anyway.
You have a choice to, say drive your car or not. But you do, despite the well established risks. Perhaps you are a very skilled driver, with years of experience. But you go anyway. You may not deserve pity, but when the traffic around you crashes into you, what exactly _do_ you deserve?
