Mauritius has declared a state of environmental emergency after a grounded Japanese-owned ship began spilling tonnes of oil.
France is to send help from Reunion, its neighbouring territory, and a volunteer clean-up operation is already under way.

So sad to see that another boat incident is causing a huge oil spill into pristine waters and killing fish and marine life, around an island nation. You would kind of think though that we all should be prepared for such an incident when there are tens of thousands of large boats in the sea everyday. But weirdly we once again find out that there were no booms available and ready to deal with an accident like this! No civil defence planning or preparation in evidence again! This needs to change in all of our govts, they need to be prepared for accidents at sea, just like fires! And ready to action plans with resources. Charge the ship owners for the clean up and disposal of the boat. Long delays should no longer be acceptable to the peoples of the world, this is what kills marine live and local economies! This happened a few years ago in New Zealand, and took months to fix too! We need to call our govts out on what we expect them to do for us taxpayers/citizens and our environments.

We has people of Earth must phase out oil tankers, there is no safety net that is capable of handling these crisis. Oil spill cleanup gear is and “proper cleanup response” is a false sense of security as so many factors can render that technology completely useless as demonstrated so clearly in this oil spill. Current spill cleanup gear can only work in flat calm waters and even then there are still factors such as current speed, can create water flow that simply goes under those types of booms.
