Soldiers have opened fire on demonstrators gathered at a protest site in Lagos that has been the epicentre of widespread rallies against police brutality in Nigeria, according to several witnesses. Nigeria’s Lagos is in a 24-hour lockdown and millions of people are under curfew across the country. Demonstrators have been on the street for days over police brutality and some senior politicians are supporting them. Human Rights Watch has released video it says shows fighters from a Congolese armed group beating civilians and getting support from the military. Shimiray Guidon is the leader of the group, the NDC-R which is accused of human rights abuses. Prosecutors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have issued a warrant for Guidon’s arrest but he remains at large. Mozambique has turned to the European Union for help to stop attacks by ISIL-linked groups in its northern region. The president wants the EU to train its forces to battle armed groups which emerged three years ago in Cabo Delgado. Since then, the fighters have stepped up the violence, seizing important towns and targeting the military. The conflict has raised fears for stability and security in the surrounding region. Thousands of people in Kenya have been forced to abandon their homes after a drastic rise in the levels of the lakes along the Rift Valley. Homes, schools, hospitals and roads are under water. Talks between West African mediators and Mali’s military coup leaders have ended with an agreement to release the overthrown president. But no deal on a transitional government. The mediation team from the regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would report to heads of state on progress made before a summit on Mali later this week, Colonel Ismael Wague said on Monday, but the military spokesman added that the final decision on the makeup of an interim transitional administration would be decided “by Malians”.
