Rising water levels along Kenya’s Great Rift Valley have forced thousands of people from their homes.
There are also fears of an ecological disaster as two lakes are getting closer – causing fear of contamination, and threatening wildlife and livelihoods.

well,it’s good, more fresh water for everyone, the lord is blessing the land-now use your brains and turn the water into drinkable…🖖
Water has never been a problem, huge aquifers lie beneath the rift , brains are plentiful too…the problem is systemic ;with colonial roots!
What disaster? We will adapt. The flamingos will find other alkaline lakes, the fish will evolve to tolerate the alkalinity as they have in lake turkana.
More water is not an ecological disaster. It’s an ecological miracle.
forget what I said
Exactly❣️
It will ecological disaster when the two lakes mix because fish 🐟 cannot survive
Did you watch the video?
Its like saying, having too much food isn’t a problem, it’s a miracle….yes, I’m 600 pounds (300 kilos), but that’s beside the point.
If they had the ability to contain the water (through wells, reservoirs, etc.) Yes it would be a blessing. But, since they cannot and since the ground isn’t able to absorb the water, it will create a number of ecological issues (which are, coincidently, discussed in the video).
@xidigta qoraxey The fish have adapted to the changes before; they will again. It’s the changing nature of these lakes. These are natural phenomena. It is the intervention of men that will be the ecological disaster.
I thought most bodies of water around the world were shrinking due to climate change, not growing ?
Actually it’s the other way round. Climate change means ice is melting, hence water is rising.
Mohammed Muchai yes of course, I know about the ice caps and sea level rise, but regarding fresh water sources like rivers and lakes, I’ve heard many stories about changing weather drying them up, particularly in the Middle East and Africa
@BLADE Well, all I have seen is water rising in most of our lakes. Recently lake Victoria rose to an unprecedented Level in almost 50 years.
The main problem is the massive deforestation caused poor vegetation and degraded soil which can not hold the rainwater
Where are the opinions of Kenyan scientists and geographers are they waiting for US to tell them to put on masks and sunglasses to understand the cause of rising water?
…this is just the beginning….the Great Rift is stirring up major changes. The continent is breaking apart…look it up and see all the lakes lined up along the Rift Valley…land is tearing up literally overnight, mix in the crazy amount of rainfall…the lakes will grow and merge…then the Djibouti/Eritrea section will give way and the Red Sea will pour into the deep valley running from Ethiopia all the way to Tanzania.
Novopangea in process
which means a new subcontinent will form separate from africa.
Sea level has been rising. Not only because of global warming, but also because of land subsidence due to household water pumps
Stop taking underground water at home, massive fossil fuel usage, oil palm & sunflower plantations and animal agriculture. Humans can’t always contain the sea by building big walls
@Cosmin Contra don’t have a budget how ? How come the private sector is able to provide water for everyone and people pay more for the water and the government does not have a budget? It’s called kenya water cartels
@Anonymous You should’ve asked your government about how they make money for their country. Also about how much loss the country has suffered due to bad business, climate change, corruption, political and social problems
Other developing countries are also facing the same problems, because of their weak systems since the countries were founded
@Cosmin Contra we don’t need to ask them how they make money we know because we get a receipt when we buy anything they take 16%, when you open a business they charge us , if you are selling door to door they harrass you you have to pay the tax to sell whether you make a profit or not, then at the end of the year they send us an e_ mail for tax return, thenbthey announce all the money they have borrowed in fact fr water projects and dams but the people neighboring the dam can’t use that water , stupid stuff like that
@Anonymous Taxes are normal, since they also exist in other countries. The countries get money from their overseas workers, foreign investments and tourism
Apart from those methods, the country government bodies also make some investments abroad. The problem occurs when their big overseas investment isn’t profitable
@Cosmin Contra our government does not invest in stocks I don’t think only individuals they sell agricultural products and minerals gems gold and workers overseas send money ,anyway there is enough money for everyone it just goes to individual pockets
🌬🌬🌬😔😔😔
since the africans have the right to come europe and oun private property, whites too should go in africa and take it over
Wow I have not seen this in Kenyan local news 😂
It was there in a different way Naivasha was shown lake Naivasha has submerged homes
Siasa itaruhusu kweli hehe??!
Probably this was years ago.
@Purity purity HAHAHA!!!
Well…birds seem happy.
more water is a good thing lol . build canals / dams. water filtration plants.
there’s good money in that. but if you turn your attention to a deforestation hippie nothing will come of good plans xD.
all those things you said come with their own ecological problems
humans need to understand, the earth will do what it feels like, and we humans like animals must adapt or perish, IN OTHER WORDS humans are like fleas on a dog back, you have two choices go where the dog goes or get off ,WE ARE NOT TREES , we can move
More and more People moving closer to the Lake – what do you expect ?
The lake expanded “8 kilometers”. What did You not understand from that part?
That is a flexible lake 😁
Wakale and tribalism now this kale reporter wants to blame kikuyus for deforestation when people living around lake baringo destroyed all the trees that all the animals in the lake died it’s everyone to blame but people in central have tried their best to maintain clean water that’s why everyone dependa on water from central Kwa hivyo waschana na sisi
Very sad. Not too good news for the communities here.
I can imagine that the crocodiles will be a problem😲
They ate them all long ago…
texxstalker
What?
Africans need to start planting trees, and figure out a solution to this issue
Most African politicians would talk without any action till the world ends.
They see everyday to be an election campaign day.
You can say it about most politicals in the world, not just Africa.
Maybe the fisherman should not take such small fish?
Talk about conservation that when my primary worry is empty stomach..let me guess, you are a white non-kenyan.
As report didn’t mention when this will happen, my guess it’s like 100 yrs, if it was 20 yrs reporter would have said so to stir up more ‘feelings’ Pretty ironic the woman works on helping arid land farming next to a lake that is rising 2 cm a day. Might I suggest USE THE LAKE WATER FOR IRRIGATION and if pumps aren’t feasible the rivers flow DOWNHILL to the lake, intercept them UPHILL of the lake and funnel water out into catchments / reservoirs dry stream beds where more catchments can be built. I’m sure people won’t want to give up any of their land for these THAT’s YOUR BIG PROBLEM TO ADDRESS, compensating those helping all. Might try a co-op w part of increased agriculture of those getting water going back to people whose land is used for canals etc. If people distrust ea so much, maybe that land can be donated to a church who then gets and distributes food,
BUILD A BARRIER BETWEEN THE LAKES?? THE barrier could be Banyan trees,,, Someone with this knowledge should write an article on it,,, then try to get it published in National Geographic Magazine,,, Be sure to stump for all the solutions that people put forward… there are People who has seen this problem solved before… Best wishes ❤ for a timely solution…
Their leaders are corrupt . This has nothing to do with Europe.
Who said anything about europe?
Be very ashamed of your ignorance
Leaders are eating covid 19 money this country
Do you believe this nonsense?
I will love to breathe the breath of my motherland
So you couldn’t get a kenyan expert….you had to run to a colonizer to explain to you whats happening in your own country….the utter stupidity of the brainwashed is sickening
everything in kenya is scam. let the colonizer do her thing
She has been living and studying conservation in that area for more than 40years!! She is a Kenyan!! If your contribution is only hate – go drown in the lake!!
The earth doesn’t care about humans.
The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.
Albert Einstein
This is a wake up call to everyone that if we will not this make an action , not only poor will possibly affected to this kind of event.
Ask allah for help haahahaha
Who cares….
Can you say Birth Control…
The hostess is pretty😍😍😍
I ask Dear God humbly to Bless the true believers of Kenya.💕🍑🌺🍭🍏🌹🍓🎂☀️🍰🥜🦁😀🍎🌈🍁🍿🍿💐🌸🍉🌿🌾🍄🍄🥝🍦🌽🌷🌼🌼❤️🕌❤️🕌❤️🕌❤️🕌
The temperature gets warmer, and there’s drought; climate change.
The temperature drops and there’s flooding; climate change.
No one seems to question why it is no matter what the weather does, it’s climate change.
One should question anyone who tells you to fear the end of the world, but if you give them your freedom, your political power, and your money, they’ll save you.
They predicted the swallowing of islands and coastal areas; didn’t happen. They predicted the end of ice on both poles; didn’t happen. They predicted starvation due to drought; didn’t happen. They predicted starvation because of floods; didn’t happen. They predicted war and doom; didn’t happen. They keep being wrong, keep changing their stories, yet people still believe them. Nothing they predicted came true. Nothing happening now, hasn’t happened before.
Maybe it’s time to stop listening to fools, and stop paying them. Others have gone through these things, no extinction happened, and those people had less technology.
Climate change is a complete lie.
*Some parts in kenya lack water.the governmenr should chanel this fresh water to other dry parts in the country*
🤩🤩🤣🤣🤣
It’s not raining in Kenya. Liars
the water causing the rise in levels doesn’t necessarily have to come from rain
It’s not just Kenya got affected by floods this year, many countries being floods this time of the year.
Guys…. I’m confused…..we used to hear deforestation reduces amount of rainfall and as a result natural springs dry up…..
But what I do not understand this concept that deforestation has caused to the rise of the water levels in of the lake.
Or ndio inamaana hatukuwa tukielewa science ya Wazungu…..
Let’s think twice before we start again to sing the song Wazungu wants us to sing.
Hey Kenyans wake up… wake up
Forests are like a sponge… They suck up and hold the rain water then release it slowly into the ecosystem… This prevents erosion, floods and drastic changes in the surrounding lake’s water levels.. also it keeps the rivers running with water for a longer time over the year
NOPE
More water is a blessing if one can wise up!
Kenya harvest this water and export it to Egypt if you dont need it, there people are desperate of this commodity.
Colonizers and their lies. Always poke nosing where they are not wanted. Hopefully the only place we see them in future are museums..
Use the water 💦 and just relocate near by where it won’t flood.
Luv from Afghanistan 🇦🇫
Move… There is no other solution…
🤝
The only thing you see in our local television is only politics🤔🤔
Can you find some positive news to report about Kenya? We are tired of your negative nonsense.
