Palestine’s ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour says the international community has an “immediate responsibility” to bring about a ceasefire with Israel. The United States, a close ally of Israel, has for the third time this week reportedly blocked the UN Security Council’s (UNSC) statements condemning Israel’s actions and calls for a ceasefire. As Israel’s army continues to bomb the Gaza Strip early on Wednesday, at least 35 Palestinians, including 12 children have died. At least five Israelis have died after Hamas, which rules Gaza, launched multiple rocket attacks from the Palestinian-controlled territory. The rocket fire came after Hamas demanded Israel pull its security forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. Gaza has not been subject to such intense bombardment since 2014. Dozens of young girls have been buried at a desolate hilltop cemetery in Kabul, a day after a secondary school was targeted in the bloodiest attack in Afghanistan in more than a year. The attack happened in Dasht-e-Barchi, a west Kabul suburb populated mostly by Hazara Shia, just as pupils were leaving at the end of the day. Witnesses said it appeared well-coordinated and intended to kill as many children as possible. More than 200 people, mostly Palestinians, have been injured in clashes with Israeli police in occupied East Jerusalem. Violence broke out at the Al Aqsa Mosque and elsewhere in the city.
