U.K. election result will be historic, political lecturer says

The U.K. will hold its general election on July 4, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced last week, after economic data showed a fall in inflation. Regardless of the results, “it definitely will be a historic election,” said Hannah Bunting, lecturer in quantitative British politics at the University of Exeter. The Labour Party would need a 12.7% swing in the vote to win a parliamentary majority — higher than that achieved by Tony Blair, who ousted John Major in 1997 on a wave of popularity — she said. What makes China uncomfortable?

Neither the Biden nor Trump administrations are good for China from the country’s perspective, said Cheng Li, a professor at the University of Hong Kong. While a second Biden administration offers some stability as the current president is expected to continue his policies, China does not like Biden’s attempts to contain the country’s growing power, said Li. He also said that it is “dangerous” for Biden to frame the U.S.-China conflict in terms of democratic versus authoritarian regimes, as this would push China into a corner with other countries facing similar pressures exerted by the U.S. Subscribe to CNBC International TV: http://cnb.cx/2wAkfMv Subscribe to CNBC International: http://cnb.cx/2gft82z LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/cnbc-international/ TikTok: […]
