Yemen’s Houthi rebels release Saudi attack video

Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Sunday broadcast footage they said was of a major attack into Saudi Arabia that killed or wounded 500 soldiers with thousands of others surrendering. Yahya Saree, a Houthi military spokesman, described an ambush on the Saudi forces that then developed into an “all-out” cross-border offensive that trapped the troops inside Saudi Arabia. “More than 200 were killed in dozens of [missile and drone] strikes while trying to escape or surrender,” Saree said. The fighting took place in the southern region of Najran with video images aired showing armoured vehicles hit by blasts and surrendering soldiers. Myanmar conflict: Arakan violence rises in Rakhine state

In Myanmar’s Rakhine state, another ethnic group besides the Rohingya has been fighting for its rights and recognition. The ethnic Arakan people have been battling the Myanmar government for decades, and in 2009 founded their own armed group, the Arakan Army, in 2009. Thousands have fled the violence into neighbouring Chin State and are now living in camps because of the recent spike in violence. Kenyan scientists harvest eggs to save northern white rhinos

Scientists in Kenya say the northern white rhino is one step away from being saved from extinction. On Thursday they successfully carried out a ground-breaking procedure of harvesting eggs from the world’s only two surviving female northern white rhinos. Sperm saved from the last living male northern white rhino called Sudan and a few others will be used to inseminate the eggs in an attempt to save the species. Russia launches floating nuclear power Akademik Lomonosov

A huge vessel, the world’s only floating nuclear power plant, has left its dock in the Russian port of Murmansk and is on its way to the arctic town of Pevek despite opposition from environmental groups. The 144-metre long and 30-metre wide vessel, named the Akademik Lomonosov after the 18th-century Russian scientist, houses two nuclear reactors. It will be towed 6,000 kilometres to the remote Siberian region of Chukotka, about 86 kilometres from the US state of Alaska, after leaving the port on Friday. Flying Frenchman crosses English Channel by hoverboard

A French inventor has crossed the English Channel on a jet-powered hoverboard. Franky Zapata’s hoverboard is powered by kerosene which he carries in a backpack. He took off from Sangatte near Calais and reached Dover in just over 20 minutes – but he had to stop for fuel.
