Why Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes are going through a crisis

Thousands of people in Kenya have been forced to abandon their homes after a drastic rise in the levels of the lakes along the Rift Valley. Homes, schools, hospitals and roads are under water. Environmentalists say decades of deforestation and this year’s unusually heavy rains have contributed to the disaster. Mali transition talks end with no deal, military leaders agree to release Keita

Talks between West African mediators and Mali’s military coup leaders have ended with an agreement to release the overthrown president. But no deal on a transitional government. The mediation team from the regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would report to heads of state on progress made before a summit on Mali later this week, Colonel Ismael Wague said on Monday, but the military spokesman added that the final decision on the makeup of an interim transitional administration would be decided “by Malians”. Mali coup leaders promise elections after Keita overthrow

Malian opposition leader Mahmoud Dicko said he would step back from politics, after meeting soldiers who deposed the president in a coup. The new military rulers have ordered civil servants to return to work, and promised to oversee democratic elections, within a “reasonable timeframe”. The international community has condemned Tuesday’s coup, with some announcing sanctions. Mali coup: Soldiers promise to hold new elections

Soldiers in Mali have forced President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita to resign. Military leaders say they will form a transitional, civilian-led government and organise, what they call, credible elections. The West African regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the coup. In the coming hours, the UN Security Council will meet to discuss the crisis. Mali president, prime minister arrested in apparent coup

Mali’s president and prime minister are said to have been arrested in what could be a coup. Pictures on social media show two cars carrying President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse. A video shows protesters, who have been calling for Keita to quit, celebrating in the capital, Bamako. Ship leaking tonnes of oil off Mauritius splits apart

More than 9,000 arrests in Ethiopia since June killing of singer

More than 9,000 people have been arrested in Ethiopia during recent unrest that followed the killing of a popular musician. That’s according to the state-run Human Rights Commission which says 178 people have died in the violence since June. Critics now worry the country might be sliding back towards repression. Indian Ocean faces growing threat of fuel spill

The MV Wakashio ship still has more than half of its 4,000 tonnes of fuel on board after running aground off Mauritius last month.
