UK sailing its largest warship amid South China Sea tensions

The United Kingdom has moved its largest warship, and a number of other ships, to the South China Sea. London has said it is focusing on the region amid increased Chinese activity in disputed waters. Experts said that China, which has shadowed the British fleet with ships of its own, considers the UK’s Carrier Strike Group’s presence to be unfriendly, but the warships have thus far steered clear of islands claimed by China. More than 10,000 waiting to be evacuated at Kabul airport: US | Al Jazeera Breakdown

Army Major General William Taylor, with the U.S. military’s Joint Staff, told a news briefing more than 10,000 people were at Kabul airport waiting to be evacuated from Afghanistan. The Pentagon claimed it evacuated some 19,000 people in the past 24 hours. More than 70,000 people, foreigners and Afghans, have been evacuated since August 14, the day before the Taliban swept into Kabul. Malaysia’s Muhyiddin resigns after troubled 17 months in power

Muhyiddin Yassin has tendered his resignation as Malaysia’s prime minister but will stay on in a caretaker role until a successor is found.
