Some of Iran’s biggest oil customers appear to be succumbing to US pressure to curb imports from Tehran. After withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposing sanctions on Iran, Donald Trump started urging countries that import oil from Iran to find alternate suppliers. Iran says it won’t bow to US pressure – and is threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz. Two resolutions on the escalation of violence at the Gaza-Israel border have failed at the UN Security Council. Since March, Israeli soldiers have shot dead at least 121 Palestinians who have been protesting for the right to return to their homeland. The US vetoed a Kuwait-backed resolution calling for the protection of Palestinians. The US then failed to muster a single vote of support for its resolution condemning Hamas. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, also known as BDS, could potentially cost Israel up to $11.5bn dollars a year. That’s according to a partially redacted Israeli government report from 2013, which factored in the most extreme scenario of a full blown EU boycott of Israeli products and a halt to investments. It’s a sequence that may seem unlikely, but has Israeli leaders worried nonetheless. In recent years, Israel’s diplomatic missions have made countering BDS a priority and its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has moved to ban groups which support the movement. So what is BDS? BDS is a non-violent people led movement that aims to economically pressure Israel into […]

“One nation, solemnly promised to a second nation, the country of a third.” That’s how one writer famously described the Balfour Declaration – the declaration by then-British Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour, on November 2, 1917, that said, “His Majesty’s government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. […]” One hundred years later, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues, with no sign of any sort of resolution. So, how central was the Balfour Declaration to later developments and what role did Britain play subsequently? And should the declaration be celebrated as the first step towards the establishment of the state of Israel […]

The Russian government is giving away land in its Far East in a bid to increase the region’s sparse population. Any eager Russian can put their name down for a free hectare of land. The only obligations are to use the plots productively, and not sell them to foreigners. Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports from Kamchatka.
