Mozambique has turned to the European Union for help to stop attacks by ISIL-linked groups in its northern region. The president wants the EU to train its forces to battle armed groups which emerged three years ago in Cabo Delgado. Since then, the fighters have stepped up the violence, seizing important towns and targeting the military. The conflict has raised fears for stability and security in the surrounding region. The World Food Programme says more than 300,000 people have fled the violence. Mali’s president and prime minister are said to have been arrested in what could be a coup. Pictures on social media show two cars carrying President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse. A video shows protesters, who have been calling for Keita to quit, celebrating in the capital, Bamako. The latest dispute is over the the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the largest hydroelectric dam project in Africa. Ethiopia’s government says its $4 billion project on the Blue Nile will provide power to its more than 100 million citizens and create huge opportunities for its economy. It wants to start filling the dam’s reservoir in July when its rainy season begins.
