Pakistan’s Sialkot: Home of World Cup footballs

They have never qualified for a World Cup but for years, most of the world’s footballs have come from northeast Pakistan. The city of Sialkot makes about two-thirds of them including the official ball for the 2022 World Cup. Textile hub Bangladesh revives muslin, the forgotten elite fabric

With wooden spinning wheels and hand-drawn looms, Bangladesh is painstakingly resurrecting a fabric once worn by Mughal emperors, Marie Antoinette and Jane Austen, but long thought forever lost to history. Dhaka muslin was stitched from threads so fine that popular folklore in European parlours held that a change in the light or a sudden rain shower would render its wearer apparently naked. Protests flare in crisis-hit Sri Lanka as gov’t readies for IMF talks

Tuesday’s protests came as the government is heavily in debt and struggling to pay for essential imports. The 2019 Easter bombings on churches and hotels killed 270 people and hit vital tourism revenue. The pandemic which followed further hampered recovery. Analysts blame unsustainable debt, low revenue, a foreign exchange crisis, financial mismanagement and corruption for aggravating dire problems. Russian-led military forces begin withdrawal from Kazakhstan
