Putin’s plan: What does partial mobilisation mean?

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a partial mobilisation after Moscow’s troops suffered losses in Ukraine. In a televised address on Wednesday, Putin warned Western nations supporting Ukraine that Moscow would defend itself with the might of all its vast arsenal if faced with a nuclear threat from the West. He also announced his support for planned referendums in Ukrainian territories under Russian control. Meanwhile, Ukrainian leaders are far from scared by the prospect of fighting a much larger army. Ukraine war: Buhas village under separatist control

In the second agreed corridor, the village of Buhas was expecting to receive people from the city of Volnovakha fleeing the war. However, residents are hunkering down in bomb shelters as fighting continues all around them, making humanitarian evacuations nearly impossible. The area is now under the control of Russian-backed rebel forces from Donetsk – just a few kilometres from the latest front line. Anxiety grows in eastern Ukraine as residents brace for Russian invasion

The regions in eastern Ukraine recognised by Russia as independent extend far beyond areas under rebel control. With the Minsk agreement now in tatters – Ukraine has declared Avdiivka and other towns and villages along the frontline, restricted areas. Al Jazeera’s Hoda Abdel-Hamid reports from Avdiivka, one of the frontline towns in eastern Ukraine, where the threat of invasion is now exposing social divides. – Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe – Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish – Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera – Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/ #RussiaUkraineTensions #UkraineCrisis #Donetsk

Ukrainian soldiers in front lines report intensified shelling

Ukrainian government soldiers in front-line trenches in Ukraine’s east said on Monday that heavy shelling from Russian-backed separatists had intensified to provoke all-out conflict amid fears of Russia seeking a pretext for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian troops have battled Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway regions bordering Russia since 2014. A ceasefire deal in 2015 halted the worst fighting, but shelling has intensified along the “line of contact” since last week as Russia masses forces along Ukraine’s borders. Putin recognises independence of Ukraine breakaway regions

Russian President Vlamidir Putin has signed the presidential decree recognising the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine – a move that will severely ratchet up tensions with the West amid fears of a Russian invasion. Putin’s announcement comes after a meeting of the presidential Security Council and paves the way for Russia to openly send troops and weapons to the long-running conflict pitting Ukrainian forces against Moscow-backed rebels.
