Global concerns over Solomon Islands-China security deal

Australia says it’s “deeply disappointed” that the Solomon Islands has signed a wide-ranging security agreement with China. The US and its allies in the Asia-Pacific say it could destabilise the islands and the region, bringing Chinese warships within 2,000km of the Australian coast. 10 Myanmar police killed in attack by ethnic armies: Reports

A coalition of three powerful armed groups in Myanmar has reportedly attacked security forces for the first time since a ceasefire in 2019 . At least 10 officers were killed in the eastern Shan state. Meanwhile, in Bago, details are emerging of Friday’s violent crackdown by the military in which at least 60 people are believed to have been killed. Myanmar police shoot dead 2 protesters in bloodiest post-coup day

0 Violence is escalating in Myanmar, with security forces cracking down further on protesters demanding a return to civilian rule. At least two people were killed and several injured as police tried to break up demonstrations in Myanmar’s second city of Mandalay. The officers used live fire on the protesters. Uganda votes in tense presidential election

0 Voting has started in Uganda in fraught presidential and parliamentary elections with an internet blackout in place. Longtime President Yoweri Museveni is competing against opposition front-runner Bobi Wine, a pop star-turned-opposition leader. Security forces have killed more than 50 people in opposition rallies. Two-thirds of the country’s registered voters are under the age of 30 and many feel disconnected from politics.
