Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces has denied responsibility for the killing of the West Darfur regional governor. The army earlier said the paramilitary group had killed Khamis Abbabakr in el Geneina. No details of his death have been reported. Earlier Abbabakr had described the situation in the city as a ‘genocide’. The latest conflict has reignited long-running ethnic tensions in the Darfur region. Coastguards have recovered the bodies of at least 78 people, who drowned off the southern coast after their fishing boat sank. Operations are underway to find hundreds of others who are missing and feared dead. Survivors say the boat was carrying up to 700 migrants from several countries including Pakistan, Egypt and Syria. At least nine people have been killed in the latest clashes between members of rival ethnic groups in India’s northeastern state of Manipur, police said, as security forces pressed on with a hunt for illegal weapons. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is wrapping up a visit to Nicaragua, where he has met President Daniel Ortega in Managua.
