Africa debt relief: Putin makes announcement at final day of summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told leaders from African states meeting in St. Petersburg, Moscow is forgiving 23-billion-dollars of debt owed by them. Putin is also promising to maintain grain supplies to the continent and to increase Russia’s diplomatic presence. He’s blaming the West for high food prices and inflation after printing money during the pandemic. Putin says the global economic system is going through significant change. Kenya closes schools before three days of tax-hike protests

Kenya’s government has closed schools in the capital and two other areas as East Africa’s economic powerhouse on Wednesday braced for three days of demonstrations against the cost of living and tax hikes. Two rounds of protests earlier this month descended into violence when police fired tear gas canisters, and in some cases live rounds, at the crowds.
