The standoff between Russia and Ukraine has Europeans worried about gas supplies. A third of Europe’s natural gas comes from Russia. And if there is a war – Europe would have to turn to other providers. EU leaders have been clear that a Russian act of aggression against Ukraine would have dire consequences for President Putin and his country. It would mean an end to his hopes of bringing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline on time, depriving him of tens of billions of dollars in revenue and depriving the EU of hundreds of billions of cubic metres of Russian gas. The crisis between Russia and Ukraine has prompted one of the biggest mobilisations of Western forces in Europe in generations, but it is a delicate balancing act. The West fears Moscow is preparing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while the Kremlin says it is countering decades of NATO expansion eastwards. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula caught allied Western forces off guard. With European security once again at stake, the NATO alliance wants its presence firmly felt. According to government statistics, half of Spain’s municipalities are at risk of losing their population. These are primarily towns of fewer than 1000 people. But the data shows this issue is no longer confined to just rural areas. People are also moving out of provincial capitals and small to medium-sized cities. To reverse the trend, this year, the European Union gave Spain more than $11bn for a “repopulation program”. The goal is to provide small towns with more basic services, high-speed internet, and funding for housing and job creation.
