Top Iranian nuclear scientist assassinated near Tehran

Iran’s president has accused Israel of assassinating its prominent nuclear scientist. Hassan Rouhani says the killing of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh will not slow down Tehran’s nuclear programme. Gunmen ambushed a vehicle carrying him and his bodyguards, near the capital on Friday. Iran has promised retaliation, for what the president calls an act of despair by the enemy. Fakhrizadeh later died in hospital. Iraq PM vows he ‘won’t allow threats’ to Iran from Iraqi soil

Analysis: 50 US troops face brain injuries after Iran strikes

The Pentagon now says 50 US troops in Iraq have been diagnosed with “traumatic brain injuries” after the Iranian missile strikes earlier this month on the military facility where they were based. The United States originally announced that nobody had been hurt in the strikes that were in retaliation to the US assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. But last week, the Pentagon said 34 people had been injured and that some were still receiving treatment. How US forces avoided casualties in Iran attacks on Iraqi bases

Iraqi and US-led coalition troops have been targeted by rockets and missiles in at least six attacks since the assassination of Qassem Soleimani. Protesters leave US embassy compound in Baghdad

Determined to carry their fight into the new year, protesters kicked 2020 off with a march from the city’s central park.
