Peru’s Congress has voted to remove President Martin Vizcarra from office in an impeachment trial over corruption allegations. He is accused of accepting bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies that won public works contracts. The vote came during his second Congressional trial in less than two months but he denies all of the allegations against him. Vizcarra has popular public support because he introduced an anti-corruption drive in Peru. A massive explosion in Lebanon’s capital Beirut has killed at least 78 people and injured thousands more as a shockwave devastated the city. The explosion happened at a port warehouse where about 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate has been stored for years. Hospitals are overwhelmed. The whole of Italy – a country of some 60 million people – has been placed under quarantine, as the government there steps up efforts to tackle a coronavirus outbreak that has affected more than 9,000 people and left 463 dead. The Saudi-UAE-led coalition has confirmed that one of its warplanes has crashed in Yemen’s northern al-Jawf province. Houthi rebels say its forces shot down the Royal Saudi Air Force plane on Friday.
