Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned after protests over the island nation’s worsening economic crisis turned deadly. In a statement on Monday, his office said he was quitting in order to help form an interim, unity government, following weeks of often violent protests across the country over spiraling prices and shortages of fuel and other vital imports. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has held a face-to-face meeting in Moscow with Russia’s president. It is the first time the UN chief has visited Russia since the war in Ukraine began. Guterres has offered direct UN assistance with the safe evacuation of the Azovstal plant in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol where at least a thousand civilians remain trapped.
