The Taliban has declared the war in Afghanistan over after its fighters swept into the capital, Kabul, and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. As American forces continue to evacuate diplomats and Afghan partners through Kabul airport, the armed group has taken control of the now-abandoned presidential palace. The Taliban have taken control of Jalalabad, capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, early on Sunday morning without a fight, according to officials and a resident. This effectively leaves the capital Kabul as the last major urban area under government control – it follows the Taliban’s seizure of the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The collapse of the eastern city would mean another major setback for President Ashraf Ghani’s government and will put the Taliban effectively in control of most of the country. China and Russia have begun a series of joint military drills in northeastern China that the two countries have described as a counterterrorism exercise. The five-day drills in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are taking place just weeks before the US is due to complete its military pullout from Afghanistan, which borders China. The Taliban has captured three more provincial capitals, as they take their fight to the cities after seizing much of the countryside in recent months. The group has seized five provincial capitals in Afghanistan since Friday in a lightning offensive that appears to have overwhelmed government forces. Kunduz, Sar-e-Pol and Taloqan in the north fell within hours of each other on Sunday, the Taliban and officials in the cities confirmed.
