The mayor of the South African city of Cape Town says firefighters have contained a blaze that has ravaged the slopes of Table Mountain. Strong winds fanned the flames for more than 24 hours, destroying more than 400 hectares of land and buildings including parts of a university. The ISIL (ISIS) group has claimed responsibility for an attack on the town of Palma in northern Mozambique, which left dozens of people dead and thousands missing. It said its fighters had seized the town in the gas-rich region after several days of fighting. Mozambique’s military says dozens of civilians have been killed in a five-day siege, including seven who tried to flee from a hotel in the northern town of Palma. A military spokesman says hundreds of other people – locals and foreigners – were rescued from the town which is a logistics hub for international gas projects in Cabo Delgado province where fighting is still ongoing.
