There have been scattered demonstrations in Afghanistan to mark independence day. In defiance of the Taliban that took over the country on Monday, the Afghan national flag was paraded in the streets. In some cities, the Taliban dispersed crowds with gunfire. But in a rare move, it did allow Shia Muslims to commemorate the day of Ashura. After 9/11, United States President George W. Bush launched a ‘global war on terror.’ Within weeks, the Taliban was toppled for providing safe haven for Al al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. In May 2011, US Special forces killed Osama bin Laden in neighbouring Pakistan. As the war continued, diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement intensified. In 2013, the Taliban opened an office in Qatar at the US’s request, but it wasn’t until 2020 that a peace deal was reached under the Trump Administration. The Taliban have taken control of Jalalabad, capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, early on Sunday morning without a fight, according to officials and a resident. This effectively leaves the capital Kabul as the last major urban area under government control – it follows the Taliban’s seizure of the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The collapse of the eastern city would mean another major setback for President Ashraf Ghani’s government and will put the Taliban effectively in control of most of the country.
