Over 200 former Afghan troops, officials killed since Taliban takeover: UN

More than 200 former Afghan soldiers and officials have been killed extrajudicially since August 2021 despite a general amnesty announced by the Taliban immediately after its takeover. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) – in its first report since the Taliban takeover two years ago – documented 800 cases of serious human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture and enforced disappearances. UNAMA recorded almost half of all extrajudicial killings of former government officials and Afghan security forces during the first four months of Taliban rule. Afghanistan bitter winter: Severe cold kills more than 150 people

A wave of freezing temperatures is sweeping across much of Afghanistan. In roughly two weeks, more than 150 people have died. Most were those living in remote rural villages cut off by heavy snowfalls. It has thought to be the coldest winter Afghanistan has experienced in a decade – with temperatures as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius. Afghan women protest after Taliban enforces university ban

Protests have been held in some cities in Afghanistan against the Taliban’s decision to ban women from universities. Demonstrators have in Jalalabad and Kabul, pledged solidarity with female students. Girls have already been banned from middle school and high school. Afghanistan: Loud blast, gunshots heard near a hotel in Kabul

A series of explosions followed by repeated gunfire have been heard in Kabul. An eyewitness says the explosion took place near a hotel popular with Chinese investors. Armed men stormed the building in central Kabul and opened fire. It’s yet not known who is behind the attack or if there are any casualties. Badri-313: The Taliban brigade patrolling Kabul’s airport

More than two months since chaotic evacuations from Kabul’s international airport after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, things are slowly returning to something closer to normal. The airport is open to aid deliveries, as well as a few charter planes and evacuation flights. An elite unit of the Taliban is now in charge of securing the airport. Afghan city defies norm by keeping schools open for girls

The Taliban came to power promising to respect women’s rights and allow girls’ education – in line with Islamic precepts.
