It has been one month since the Taliban captured Kabul and seized control of Afghanistan. But with foreign funds drying up, Afghanistan and its new government are facing a cash crisis. With the cash shortage has come an increase in the prices of everyday items, and employment is in short supply, leaving many Afghans struggling to make ends meet. Taliban forces have sealed off Kabul’s airport to most Afghans hoping for evacuation, as the United States and its allies wound down a chaotic airlift that will end their troops’ two decades in Afghanistan. Western leaders acknowledged that their withdrawal would mean leaving behind some of their citizens and many locals who helped them over the years, and they promised to try to continue working with the Taliban to allow local allies to leave after President Joe Biden’s Tuesday’s deadline to withdraw from the country. Army Major General William Taylor, with the U.S. military’s Joint Staff, told a news briefing more than 10,000 people were at Kabul airport waiting to be evacuated from Afghanistan. The Pentagon claimed it evacuated some 19,000 people in the past 24 hours. More than 70,000 people, foreigners and Afghans, have been evacuated since August 14, the day before the Taliban swept into Kabul. The crowds outside Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport continue to grow with each passing day of Taliban rule. Thousands of Afghans and foreigners are still waiting to flee Afghanistan, with more chaotic scenes at the airport. Getting there is perilous; the Taliban patrols the roads around the airport, the last remaining members of a CIA-backed Afghan intelligence force controls the last stretches leading to the north gate of the airport, and finally, foreign troops guard the mammoth gate. For now, most people attempting to flee the country are being kept outside the airport perimeter in dire conditions, with little information on what awaits them. The US says it is flying […]
The Taliban will not agree to an extension of the evacuation mission from Afghanistan, a spokesman for the group told Al Jazeera. The move would mean “extending occupation” and that is “a red line”, Suhail Shaheen, a member of the Taliban delegation in Doha, the capital of Qatar, said on Monday. US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that the “hard and painful” airlift of Americans and tens of thousands of others from Afghanistan’s capital is accelerating, but he would not rule out extending it beyond the August 31 deadline he set before the Taliban’s swift takeover. The airport has been the scene of chaos since the Taliban seized the […]
Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has arrived in Kabul for talks to hammer out a new Afghan government, nearly a week after the armed group seized the capital without resistance. And for the first time since the group’s takeover, ministry offices have reopened. There is a sense of normality resuming in Kabul, with more people in the streets. Banks remain shut in Afghanistan and people are facing difficulties due to soaring prices and the suspension of banking services. Government and private employees are facing financial issues, as they have no clue about their salaries. The US says the Taliban has agreed to ensure that civilians trying to leave Afghanistan get to Kabul’s airport safely, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has said. Sullivan says Hamid Karzai International Airport is now up and running with flights carrying Americans and Afghan civilians out of the country. Thousands of Afghans breached the airport fence on Monday in a desperate attempt to flee their nation. Despite bipartisan criticism of the evacuation, the Biden administration has defended its decision to leave Afghanistan. The Taliban has promised to respect women’s rights, forgive those who fought against it and ensure Afghanistan does not become a haven for other armed groups. But Afghans and world leaders have viewed the promises the group made in its first news conference in 20 years with scepticism. Many fear a return to the Taliban’s harsh rule from its previous stint between 1996-2001 but the group has promised to be more inclusive within the framework of Islam.
